Welcome to the future of petrol technology, the new Volkswagen TSI engine. Voted Best New Engine 2006*, the new TSI engine has a small capacity in comparison to traditional performance engines but it boasts both a turbocharger and a mechanically driven supercharger. This innovative combination ensures power delivery throughout the speed range with no turbo lag, allowing this unique Volkswagen technology and engine to not only deliver outstanding power, but also lower fuel consumption.

As a result the 1.4 litre petrol engine, fitted first to the Golf GT, puts out an impressive 168 bhp and uses it’s twincharger technology to propel you from 0-62 mph in 7.9 secs. Yet, incredibly, it also does over 38mpg, and emits just 175g of CO2 per kilometer. When it comes to cost the TSI offers the benefits of low maintenance and durable technology, promising more driving enjoyment from your car.

The innovative TSI engine technology is now available in the Golf GT and Sport along with the Golf Plus, Touran SE and Jetta. Volkswagen has further plans to make TSI technology available in other models enabling the improved driving pleasure and economy to be experienced on more models in the range.

The engine features a mechanically-driven super-charger and an exhaust-driven-turbocharger along with the Volkswagen FSI® petrol direct injection technique provides an ideal basis for economical fuel consumption and high efficiency. The result is the world's first direct-injection petrol engine with twin charging technology: the 1.4 TSI from Volkswagen.

As it is a petrol engine it is quieter and has a wider rev range than a diesel engine, but has comparable fuel economy

Maximum power of 168 bhp at 6000 RPM

Maximum torque of 177 lbs ft (240 Nm) between 1750 and 4500 RPM. This figure is equivalent to the potential of a naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of around 2.3 litres.

By comparison, the fuel consumption of the 1.4 TSI is nevertheless around 20 percent lower.

The impressively high torque across a broad range of engine speeds permits a relaxing driving style with minimal gear-changing work

I guess that's cool.

Honda advertised one last year that sounded cooler though. Better mileage, more power.
