86 VW Diesel, that I'm getting ready to put a turbo on. Started out as 52hp from factory, up to 70hp with a high-performance injection pump. Next step is a turbo, I might get to half of the hp you guys start with!!!

1.6 N/A engine right now
High perf injection pump

Wow, you really get 18hp just from a new pump? Crazy! You do need to remember that you out-torque pretty much any engine on this site, and most Honda engines of compatible size only put out ~100hp or so before turbo.

You should be able to get a great driver-friendly powerband out of that engine. Is it in a rabbit, by any chance? I used to have an n/a diesel rabbit, and it always felt great around town, then I had to merge onto the highway and I felt like I may as well be on a pedalbike.

how do you like the vw diesel? ive heard stay away from them until the later models... not much power and problems...

Yes I was able to get good hp increases from an injection pump upgrade only. The turbo is the next step, and I hope to get over 80 hp lol. I know it sounds small compared to what the Honda guys get on here. I can't speak for others VWs but mine has driven over 5,000 miles this summer without a problem, and I have averaged over 38mpg on diesel. It is almost 25 years old, and I have been replacing many rubber parts that wear out, but it has never stranded me.
