voter registration
I have never voted before, and I am wondering WHY there are so many languages to choose from on a voter application form? I thought you had to be a US citizen to vote. And if you are a US citizen you will be able to speak, read, and write the English language unless you are illiterate. Here in Hawaii they list five languages on their application form!!

Re: voter registration
Well I just now got a reply back from the elections comity here in hawaii....and was told that:
"In response to your inquiry, the State of Hawaii provides voting materials in alternative languages to meet federal law requirements. Ilokano, Chinese, and Japanese are the primary languages mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice."
So I looked it up on the U.S. Department of Justice

The Voting Rights Act makes it illegal to discriminate in voting based on someone's membership in a language minority group.
The Act requires bilingual election procedures in various states and counties for voters who speak Spanish, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Vietnamese, and more than a dozen Native American and Alaskan Native languages

It takes some getting use to living here. e.g if you go to a fast food restaurant and you have to deal with second language mostly tagalog...I enjoy listening to them when they say something that starts with the letter "f" they pronounce it "P" so they would say "puck you"!!
My Filipino friend told me this joke.. what do you call a two pilots............."a pair of pliers."
I am curious though, how long you have to live here. in America, before your just an American? I hate the prefixes associated with that. Or how much mutt you have to be mixed with that you have no idea what you are so, it is just easier to say I am an American?.
