Vortex Generators???? What is this crap???
 

Ok so I kept reading about "vortex generators" on the next installment of the Evos, and they seems to be popping up on the "mods" list of cars on cardomain and such, so what are these? Do cars really think they are airplanes? First wings, now vortex generators? Here is the article on the new Evo, under "exterior" it lists a vortex generator which "creates small vortices that reduce drag and increase the down force generated by the rear-deck spoiler"

Anyone have any info about these, or if they actually do anything, they just seem like one more "JdM cARbOn fiB3R" part for a new ricer fad to me

the 'vg's' or vortex generators were developed to take the air coming over the roof and help direct it towards the wing, exactly what you said. mitsubishi did a lot of research on this... and what they came up with is that they do affect the air towards the wing... how much... oh like like a factor of 1x 10^-15, (mt butt dyno is not that accurate yet) about the same amount that the type r valve cover makes your car any faster.. is that worth the 250+ bucks for them.... for me.. ---- no

they techincally do work.. according to research, but this could possibly be the reason that mitsubishi goes under though...


check out the new 06 sti, subaru did a similar thing only with what looks like a wing from a 85 chevy blazer on the roof

on airplanes they help create lift at slower speeds. so i really dont think they will do anything on a car other than lessen your top speed

ive heard from several evo owners that it noticeably improves the cars high speed stability

if anything i can see it making the car wobble less at high speeds' keeping air pushing the car side to side and running past the fins making it travel in a straighter more stable path... but i'm not sure if it make's the car handle any better than those carbon fiber fins that people put running up the side's of their front bumper's do...... ???

or they have highly sensitive butt dynos..


they should try some placebo's that I have laying around. they are good for many things, building muscles, curing cancer and even penial enlargement.. i am sure they would work for them...

They increase the rear spoiler's efficiency from zero to nothing.
