Default VNT 15 Disassembly Question

I want to split the turbo from the manifold, I see there are 5 bolts there between the intake and exhaust side. From what I've read you can't really do a full rebuild because of the balancing required, I am just looking to clean it up, the exhaust side gets sooooo gummed up and I also may do some work on the manifold as well.

Is it safe to just split the two? I read about marking the clock position so you can put it back exactly but I am not sure if this is what they are referring to.

Any info?

There is an alignment pin in the housing that prevents incorrect alignment.
