VIN #s and Car Thieves
Reading an urban legend site on the net I came across a little article on how thieves can casually steal cars without drawing attention to themselves.
Basically what they do is: go up to your car(when your not around) look at the drivers side dash through the windshield, write down your VIN#... type up fake documents, go down to the dealership and request a new key based on the VIN#. They then go back to your car, open the door with their newly acquiered key and drive off with your car...
Now wouldnt that suck... If i hadnt done that to my own car i wouldnt have ever known that it was possible to aquire a key that way... I once lost the key to my Eclipse. I called the dealer and asked how i could have a key made cause my old one broke. and they told me to just go down with the VIN number and they would look it up on the computer and make it. Now what tripped me out was that they didnt ask me for proof of ownership or anything. Just gave them the VIN# and they made me a key. Thats how easy it was.
Now what i recomend just to be on the safe side is to get a small peice of black electric tape and cover up your VIN# up.

You realize, if we're driving an older Honda Civic, or CRX without power windows, you can just wiggle them down and take the car, after jamming a screw driver in the ignition and turning it. (Not ot mention s-jim the window takes 2 seconds)
Someone good can do this whole process in about 30 seconds.
Oh well.. If your'e that scared about getting your car stolen, buy a new ignition switch with a new key.

bah, easiest thing to do is make a starting kill switch and hide it somewhere. Hook a relay up to the fuel pump so the fuel pump doesnt get power until u flip the switch. Or you can make it so the headlights have to be on to startt it.

the wway mine is et up it is realy hard for some one to steel it or jack it. the only part that sucks is if my battery is dead.. then it taks me about 45min to get in to it. i whould like to say all that i did but im a little parenod on giving that info out. but i can say i got ignition kill had the starter kill converted for that. so the starter works but no spark and it cant be bypased.
one thing you can do is get the vin number moved by the state and they put a plate where it used to be stating that it was moved... they put it in the diverside fdoor jam.. but this is for wasington other stats can be difrent.

doesn't matter if you kill the ignition or not; good thieves (especially here in colorad) make it look like their reparing a flat in the back. They snap your e-brake cables, and roll the car into a trailer. Drive off with it, and strip it in a garage.
