Variable AR turbine

Now I am sure that most of you have seen something like this before, but I figured I would repost it for any way.

http://www.theturboforums.com/smf/in...?topic=45148.0

Now the first bit is just blocking half of the turbine to make a smaller ar turbine, but later in the thread Pg 15 i think there is a pic of the one idea, there is one where they add a waste gate to make the turbine ar variable. In essence it is a poor mans variable vain turbo. That is easier to control then a variable vain setup as well.

Where I see this being use full for HMT'ers is on street d's where quick boost = fun ride. At the track we have antilag to build whatever boost we need, but this would allow a 1.5L D to run an HX-35, get good spool, and big HP, but maybe I'm just a O0

Easier to control than a variable vane setup? What are you smoking, Willis? Most of the variable vane turbos take PWM control, meaning you can use an AVC-R or Greddy Profec or that $99 EBC guy who is currently a sponsor to control the turbine AR. It's cake, dude.

Well I guess you learn something everyday, I new that they took PWM control, but I did not realize that any of the above would give adequate boost control. :1

Well it will still take heat better then variable vain setups, as iirc only porsche has a variable vain setup on a gasoline motor due to the egt issues.

Any of the Borg Warner VGTs are rated to 1050 degrees C, your engine will melt first.

I'm not an expert on anything else , but there's a KA-T 240 in Knoxville running some bastard dieseled out GT45 with variable vane - has a GT42 compressor and a HUGE 1.53 103mm turbine wheel. Using an AVC-R to scroll it down all the way it makes positive pressure at 2500 rpms, and has been running for 3 years now. It might have 9-10K miles on the setup, it's driven on weekends.

my vgt likes to stick and make lots of egts with very little boost then tons of boost blowing off couplers. It hates sitting over the winter. Truck coughs and sputters, blows black and blue and sounds like a dead miss when it fucks up :8

You have a Powerstroke? How many rear ends have you put in it? How many transmissions?

trans is a 5r110, tough as ----, rear end is a sterling 10.5, over twice as strong as a dana 60. If you put big gears in it (488's 513's) the pinion gets pretty small and can stip gears with big power, I have acually seen guys brake the welds on the tubes going into the center section and point the pinion at the ground again tough as ----, What were you getting at again? :P

I'm running well over 1000 ft pounds through mine and it loves it, my trucks gay compared to alot of them :8
