NEW PICKS AT BOTTOM!
OK First thing I want to throw out there is I have yet to test this system because my car is not back together. I got this Idea from the local track. All of the high horse power cars run vacuum pumps for there crank cases. With boosted cars there is always a problem with positive crank case pressure, and I have yet to fine while searching a adequate solution. I first started searching for vacuum pumps on JEGs. I came up short because all of the vac pumps are belt driven and extremely expensive, but There was one electric vac pump. It was also really expensive. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/52215/10002/-1 Stated on Jegs "Electric Vacuum Pump will add 10-15 horsepower to your engine without robbing horsepower from your crank like a standard belt driven vacuum pump. Helps to prevent blow-by and improves piston ring seal allowing your motor to make more horsepower." There good for V8s so 4cyls should be no problem. Attachment 15052 When I looked at the picture closely, I knew I had seen that pump somewhere before, But I couldn't put my finger on it. Then when I was helping my friend change his air filter in his S-10 I saw it out of the corner of my eye. ------- SCORE! S-10s come with a electric vac pump for there smog system. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-03...spagenameZWDVW They can be sourced for relatively cheap new. Attachment 15053 The bracket can be found at junkyards. You could get a used one from the junk yard. They come on S-10, Blazer, Sonoma, models: o 2000 w/ 2.2L Flex FI(5) o 2001 w/ 4.3L and 2.2L o 2002 w/ 2.2L o 2003 w/ 2.2L So I bought a new one and its on its way. I would show installed pics but I wanted to slip this in before the write up contest ended. So i made this diagram In HMT fashion. O0 Attachment 15054 Hobbs normal open switch and relay can be also found on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-HOBBS-PRESSU...QQcmdZViewItem Attachment 15055 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OEM-S...spagenameZWDVW Attachment 15056 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94346 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/pho...4399/94346.gif I didn't receive the pump I bought on ebay because they said they lost it. ::) So I hit up the junk yard and got some pumps. I got one off a Volvo, VW, and Camaro. Im going to use the Volvo and VW in my setup. The one we used for my buddies car was off a lt1 camaro. My old turbo kit doing justice. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0417.jpg Wats a teeeerrbo? http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0419.jpg LT1 smog pump http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0395.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0394.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0397.jpg This pump didn't flow ---- compared to the Volvo and VW So We cracked it open to see why. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0392.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0393.jpg First we just removed the foam, and that didn't help much. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0398.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0400.jpg Then we removed the valve and O ring. Attachment 15057 http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0408.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0411.jpg We just ground off the taps and cut the 2 wires. The pump pulled 4 inHG before this then 2.5 inHG after but the amount of flow that increased was worth the loss. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0413.jpg Switch located by drivers right foot. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0415.jpg http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0416.jpg Harbor freight vac manifold We ended up pulling from the crank case and valve cover. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/IMG_0418.jpg Ultra stealth mounting location. As you can see it has no valve. Re: Write up on vac pump NWS (o)(o)
So how much vaccuum do those pumps pull?

Ok.
Now, fix your porn. |
Re: Write up on vac pump NWS (o)(o)
I also might add a second PCV valve between the pump and the first PCV valve so that part of the system is closed when in vacuum.
|
Re: Write up on vac pump NWS (o)(o)
My porn links keep getting broken so I took some of kain's. 8)

Re: Write up on vac pump NWS (o)(o)
problem #1: it wont pull enough... you will still see crankcase pressure with one of these pumps....

Considering Iv read a couple of articles about using the same exact summit pump on grandnationals and t types and Reduced blow by, greatly or completely. |
Re: Write up on vac pump NWS (o)(o)
a lot of the power made from vacuum pumps is from running very loose piston rings to reduce friction. if your engine is not built for this you wont see the gains you should. im sure it will help some cause if there is pressure in the case then the pistons have to move down through that and you should also have a cleaner engine since you shouldnt get leaks as easy.
BTW, nice recycled porn |

BTW, nice recycled porn They are also good for motors with worn out rings. Racers have been using vac pumps for years. I just couldn't find it within my means to buy a 500+ dollar kit. |
Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
i didnt mean worn out engines, i meant running rings that dont push on the cylinder walls as hard

Vac in the crank case keeps the rings in the walls. Thats why when you break in a motor you do high vac pulls. BTW as for the cheaper comment you could go to the junk yard and buy a used pump for 15 bucks and run it to a on off switch. Then just turn it on when your going to do a run. |

Correct, Catch cans do not make vacuum, but either does your vacuum pump on a high boost, big tolerance motor. Yes Vac in the crank case is good... just not acheavable on a 700+hp motor like we've mentioned. your idea is great for 95%+ of the cars on here... as long as the pump doesnt pull too much vacuum... cheaper, not really... either can be made very cheap or very expensive... one has no moving parts or wiring though.. .and I like that. |

Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
Sweet write up. I like this method
|
Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
After reading more im defiantly going to put another PCV between the pump and the first PCV.
I read that the PCV controls the amount of vac you can pull from the crank case. So it needs to be there. |
Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
saturn cars have smog pumps that work well and are abundant also.
whoever said only sloppy motors will benefit from this has no idea what they are talking about. EVERY boosted motor, even the best built have plenty of blowby that can benefit from this, especially high boost motors. |

Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
worried about a little blow by are we
|
Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
sweet wirite up thanks vw jettas and gti's with 1.8t motors have a electric smog pump too and many other vw too possible
|
Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
The only reason I suggested using a s10 smog pump is because it is the same as the summit unit.
|
Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
Good write up I think if the exhaust can provide enough vacuum then this air pump should be plenty
|
Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
Definately worth examining... Not sure it would be enough, but definately better than a catch can itself id think....

Re: FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
Coming from an N/A back ground with V8's this topic has been discussed plenty with the majority of engine builders and back yard hacks such as myself believing it won't even have a snowballs chance in hell of doing much but making you feel better.
A guy I race with has your standard 850 horsepower big block chevy in his race car. On an engine dyno when the motor was fresh the vacuum pump (good $500 one not elec. garbage) was good for no extra power. At the end of a long season they re dynoed the motor with and without the vac. pump and without the pump motor was down 30 horses, put the pump back on and it came right back. to where it was at the beginning of a season. Not sure what point I was trying to make here anymore so ---- it. |

FWIW my car has gone no faster now without a power steering pump than it did with one, so they might rob some power, but its single digit amounts of power that isn't going to add up to anything noticeable. |

Attachment 14890 So why are you still running a pcv valve? I would think it would be best to run this setup with the line from the black box being "T'd" with the line from the vc and then ran to an oil seperator and then to the vacuum pump. either way good write-up with useful info |

either way good write-up with useful info It will only be on in boost, thats what the hobbs switch is for. I didn't want the pump to be running the whole time. Plus I wasn't worried about blow buy Na. ;) |

Not bad, so hows it working out for you?

Re: (UPDATED) FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
Well we did a couple runs no more smoke. :)
He cant stay in it because his clutch is slipping. |
Re: (UPDATED) FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
I ran 2 supra tt pcv's on my f20. You put one inline with the breather, and one on the pcv line. Make sure the flow is away from the head on both of them and you'll pull a pretty good vacuum. It makes a loud woosh when you pull the dipstick.

Re: (UPDATED) FUCK YO CATCHCAN NWS (o)(o)
would this work well on a high cr b18c with ctr pistons??
