Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
Im having some troubles with this dam welder now and its in the worst moment as Im getting ready to make some things
Its a chicago electric mig 100 fluxcored welder, cheap and simple I thought Ive used it for maybe6 pound of weld wire. I was using it for about 20 min pretty consistently when the motor started to slow down and eventually died and stopped feeding wire. This pisses me off. It took about 10 seconds to die So I see a small cloud of smoke, open the sucker up and its a popped fuse, no bigger I ran it to hard I think, ran to radioshack and grab another 2 amp 250volt fuse, blew it instantly, threw another one in and the motor ran but slowly again died, this time I see what hapened A cloom of smoke come from under the wire feed motor, then this little white box at the bottom of the electrical panel glows orange/red inside and then the fuse blows, motor cuts out. heres some pics as to what im talking about I hope someone can help me with what is going on http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...b/f06ff55c.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...0/f06ff55f.jpg Thanks guys |

Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
pull the fuse out, jam a piece of metal rod or a bolt in there, and proceed to weld.
that what i did to mine. |

Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
You did get the two year extended warranty with it when you bought it right? I have come to the conclusion that anything that comes from HF that has a motor, electronics or more than two moving parts it pays to get the warranty. I have probably 11 things with the extra warranty and they have already more than paid for themselves.
As far as fixing it, return it or probably buy another one. Hell buy a new one with the extended warranty then return the busted one. :4 Later Randy |
Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
thats a good idea if I had a harbour frieght, I picked it up off ebay for cheap but I cant afford another welder and cant afford to have someone weld for me....... pickle
Need to fix this, must be something that can be fixed |
Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
Alright man think about this you keep blowing fuses because you have a short to ground somewhere that is feeding a lot of current. more than likely you burned the motor out. It must have welded itself internaly. get a new motor O0 should have baught a miller, you get what u pay for unfortunately

Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
It turns itself off if it gets to hot doesnt it
It works for a short time everytime u throw a fuse in so i dont think its coked, theres just a small problem |
Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
gotta love the 5 finger radioshack discount, ---- paying 2 bucks a fuse

Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
my guess would be a shorted sectiion in the motor, the laquer that seperates the windings in electro-magnets/servos ect can break down if you over heat them (or if they are just cheap) and short out. i dont think your gonna find a cheap fix other than sourcing another feed motor outa sumthin.
and duty cycle doesnt refer to the motor on the spool, it refers to the transformers in the welding part of the circuitry. also theres no guarantee that you even have an auto shutoff anyway. |
Re: Uh-Oh - Welder Cooking Itself Again - Broken Mig-100 need help
I do have an autoshutoff, definetely
I have another spare one of these welders, it came with this one, guy said it didnt work but it worked fine for me, one day I touched the ground with the gun and something burned in the elec board Obviously I dont wanan go swapping motors unless I have to, I need to know how ot trace and find this problem |
