Sounds like its the bulb,

I used to ship out TV's, and before we shipped them out we QC'd them, we would warm them up, then turn them off and on about 30 or so times, to see if they would take the abuse. Most of the time they would be ok, but every then and now one of them would just burn out like that, You could hear that it was on, just there was no picture, a 400$ replacement bulb from the manufacturer fixed it in a jiffy.

just pull out the bulb and check it, shake it to make sure its not cracked internally.

what brand is it? I used to deal with RCA Sceniums all the the time. about 3-4 years ago.

^^^haha i was gonna say the same thing. take it to a tv repairman. im sure they could diagnose it pretty quickly
