Turboing a '68 I6 Mustang

My bro got a old '68 mustang, but because the dumbass got a I-6 of course he's looking for more power now.

To swap in a v8 into that he needs a new engine, tranny, and rear end... that's a bunch of work.
I was wondering how you turbo carb'd engines?
The carb is welded to the intake on this.. so I'm not sure how that's supposed to work.
How do you tune?

I'm not new to turbos, but I'm not too hot with carbs.

Also, it's a 250ci engine... but I don't think it revs very high... what kind of turbo should I be looking for for just general mid-range power? is a .60/.63 too small?

As far as selecting the right turbo, the first thing you need to do is this:

Haven't you left yet? ::)

Are you sure the carb is "welded" to the intake? There are a bunch of places you can send your carb to get them converted to a "blow through" setup. This will allow you to throw boost right through the carb and not have the fuel get pushed back through the lines.

I think a nice holset HX35 would be good for your application, where a .63/.60 T3 might be a little small.

Good luck man, that thing would be badass.

I'm pretty sure your gonna need a new diff anyways if you turbo it as well, you more than likely have to swap diffs becuase the stocker is'nt strong enough to take the extra power, I think a 351 swap with twin turbos is the way to go. :y

absolutely nothing but I'm guessing that ford to save money probually did'nt put as strong as a rear end into the v6 cars, plust I'd rather see a twin turbo v8 in there isntead of an old outdated, pos inline 6 boosted in it.

I6's arent POS's, well atleast not the chevy's, I have a hotrod magazine with the "pump gas drags finals" basically you have to have a street legal car (down to the tires and exhaust), running on pump gas. You drive like 1000 miles and ---- before you even race, and this one guy has a Nova wagon with a turbo I6 and runs low 9's, high 8's IIRC. Yes this is a built engine but shows the 6's still have some kick. I wonder if the Ford's are the same.

...Johnny?

I6 engines are not to be taken lightly! I'm sure everyone here knows how legendary the Supra I6 were. The natural balance of the engine (among other things) made it almost limitless. I've seen actual dyno tests of 867 and 986 WHP!!! from a Supra I6s before. Also heard of 1000-1100 horses from old chevy I6s (can't confirm though), and read mag. articles about an 1100hp I6 Impala (built engine) and a nearly 700hp late 60s I6 Mustang (the same one we're talking about).
You should check 'em out sometime if you haven't before. If you are serious about making some big power from a small package and you know how to properly take advantage of the balance and geometry of these engines...you can haul some serious ------- ass!!!
;D :y

Re: Turboing a '68 I6 Mustang

can anyone put up a link of where I can go for a blow through carb?
What other fuel/timing things do I need to tune for boost?

for the diff, we can always lock it up lincoln locker style and then just replace it if it breaks.

Holset sounds good... hx or hy I'll check up on both.
