Turbo the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

hey, i finally got round to getting all the bits i needed for this project

the car:
1989 Holden Calais

the engine:
3.8L Buick v6 N/A
compression ratio of 8.5:1
fresh top end,

Crow Cam Heavy Duty Valve springs
new valves
valve stem seals
ACL headgaskets
full gaskets and all that stuff
engine components tripple checked, headbolts/inlet/rocker bolts properly matched (by my self :P)

brought all the flanges off ebay and welding them up next week

done a bit of research on the turbo thats right for me and chosen a
Master Power T04E A/R 0.68 (inlet compressor wheel i think)
should spool round 3000rpm (turbo map looks to be a good match and lots of people use this turbo for my engine)
external HKS 10PSI wastegate
2 bar map sensor (to tune it for boost)
bigger injectors
front mount intercooler

hoping for 200-240rwkw out of this setup tuned right (its doable)
and for it to run 13s

total cost is around $2000AUD (yes im in australia)

picking the turbo up on saturday so ill post pics when i get the rest of the gear

Re: Turbo the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that 3.8 the same basic motor that was in the GN/Regal-T?

Re: Turbo the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

It may be the same as in my 89 toronado that was turbocharged...This engine responds very well....The tranny, not so well (stock with 140k) .I assume the Holden is RWD?

Re: Turbo the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes they put the 3.8 in about everything they could. Kinda like the d series. My dad had one in his buick station wagon

Re: Turbo the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

If this is the FWD 3.8 it is NOTHING like the 3.8 rwd engines buick used to have, as in the GNX...

That 3.8 isnt the same as the GNX 3.8.

No where close
GNX has a cast iron block model I think is LD5

Newer buick 3.8 are aluminium blocks models LN3, L27, L36, and L26

Re: Turbo the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

But since it is an 89 RWD car, it isn't running the aluminum block...

Really? LN3 Naturally Aspirated
It was in Holdens, into the 1990s. It produced 165 hp (123 kW) from 1988 through 1991. Guess I'm just stupid :P

Also that would be grammar..

Is it the dohc 3.8? The LZ1????

Re: Turbo the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

your quite correct, its a RWD all cast iron block, 2 valves per cyclinder and stock it makes 115rwkw(mine does anyway)
runs a 15.72, 1/4 mile

its a LN3, aka 3800... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:3...bonneville.JPG
except redesigned for RWD by holden

its a single cam shaft which uses pushrods, not overhead its also v90 configuration

(similar to the 88 buicks)

the Grand national heads bolt straight up to it, which im considering investing in some stage 2 heads (about $1700 AUD imported) but the ports are HUGEEE!!!!

car weighs 1300kg, and the transmissions were quite strong (Turbo700)

ive had a chat with some people who have turbo'd this engine and due to its low compression it runs 12s the cam shaft is suited for boost and pretty much it cries booost me!!!!!!!

found someone to do lazer cut all my flanges and bend my cooler piping/dump pipe

picking the turbo + wastegate up on wedensday

it should spool round 3000rpm and make max power round 4500-5000rpm, engine redlines at 5500rpm but mine goes to 6000rpm :P
