Turbo magazine(rant)

That is the magazine that started this ------- obsession for me back in 95.I remember reading about a teal green dailey driven civic with a d16(that back then ran a 12 :o) built by Pro Motion Motorsports in L.A and I knew what my quest in life would be.

Today I go to Barns&Noble and pic up a copy of that mag(I havent read one in like 4 years)and to my surprise that mag is now a carbon copy of Import Tuna :-X.That magazine used to be the best ------- magazine with the awsome and informative tech articles. And it used to be thick as ----.Now it looks like a leaflet. It seems like every mag you pick up now days is filled with drift and rice.....wheres the performance?

What mags do you guys read?

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

I stopped reading mags about 2 years ago. I couldnt take another how to intake install >:(. My reading involves hybrids.jp and hmt. Turbo was the best and always had some good write ups.

i like honda tuning and sport compact car. Import tuner is usually a ricer mag. Yeah... i noticed that, turbo isnt as good as it used to be.

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

Dsport.. but then again i dont pay for it.

they seem to have less ads in that mag though. they just did an article about a z6 hatchie that runs i think 10s..

but ya, magazines anymore are just ads with articles about "how to tune your skyline" but they left off.. The skyline you will never own :(

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

Sport Compact Car is my mag, but they're devoting more and more space to rallying, which is cool, i'm just not interested in it. I think the tech articles are really good; as they deal with not just turbocharging your car but all performance aspects of the car in general. Other than the rally thing I haven't noticed a general decline in the quality of their articles, that plus I give them props for still using flat black spraypaint on their project cars ;) Plus their performance testing is the best from any magazine, period.

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

i read 2600 allot. a hmt mag would be a good idea. we could make a simple booklet, make a bunch of copies, and hand it out to people. and try to have it sent out quarterly.

not very difficult.

slowpoke 11-01-2004 07:29 PM

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

meh, i dunno turbo mag is still a good mag, im not sure wich month it is cuz i gave it to my freind , but they had 2 11 second evo's a article about remote mount turbos (turbo at the rear of the car) and a article about a twin charged mr2 putting down over 600whp.

i still think turbo is a good mag, but it has gotten more "ricey" but theres only one person to blame for that, and thats primedia.

They own superstreet, sportcompact car, turbo, and import tuner, and a few others, its all the same company so they report the same ----. Its obviously working because ricers will buy it over and over again.

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

they have to many mags about building sti's and modding 350z's and what not. first off who can afford to buy them cars and who has 4k for a stroker kit on a new evo.

I buy Modified Mag every month pretty much, it's a good mix of Feature cars and tech stuff. I read SCC every once in a while, usually buy it if the tech stuff is good, though that's getting kinda rare :-\

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

modified is ok... I really think we should put together an HMT mag... quarterly will be fine. Grassroots motorsports does good, i think we can too

i like modified, last one i picked up had how to's on a ek h22 swap and a 3rd gen 20b swap

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

i read Honda Tuning because they usually have pretty cool tech articles like budget boost and the LSVTEC one. but they are heading down hill with the rest of them. i also read Sport Compact Car every now and then because they have cool cars and decent articles once and awhile.

i just hate the stupid subscription papers in them.
example: december Honda Tuning magazine had 99 pages and 7 of those stupid subscription cards, WTF?

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

Honda tuning sucks. It was cool when I first picked up. In fact I think that was the first import mag I ever bought. Sport compact car used to be cool, but I haven't checked it out in a while. Turbo used to have cool cars, but again I haven't checked it out in a while. Most of them are forming a new type of expensive rice. Expensive rice? 350z, skylines, and what not with body kits and bling ----. The majority of their readers don't have that ----. Then there's hot rod mag. Not as good as it used to be since the format change, but I still buy it. I think the best ones now days are grass roots, and 4x4 mags. Most info for the normal guy.

none, cause there all ----. even transworld is ---- too.

Re:Turbo magazine(rant)

i was subscibed to honda tuning recently. when they started the CRX project. once my subsciption started, they were all trash. hardly any tech at all.

I boosted my hatch after reading the budget boost ongoing section in Honda Tuning cause the first part of that project was everything to get your car boosted and very informative. I usually get SCC, Honda Tuning, GRM, and the occasional Modified since there quality of there photos are way beyond any of the other magazines.

They were better when they were DRAG. They had an article before they changed that they were going little bit rice to pay the bills. Since they changed the name they suck. IMO.
I just go to the big book store and look through all the import magazines and if they have a few good articles Ill buy it, if not Iam at no loss. Just bought one recently cause it had a very very detailed LS/VTEC conversion. I just hate it when you buy one for something like that and find out, since u didnt read it in the store, that it is incomplete and a big waste of time and money. I bought Honda Tuning cause they had a 3 part H22A/EG article. It took them over half a year for all 3 parts and they were incomplete and could get more info on that swap off a shitty thread. *sorry of the rant*
the books are good to spend ur money on like Corky Bell's turbo book or any of the better tuner books. Watch out for some books though cause they have gone the same way the mags have and some are just rice. I dont think we all need to learn to install intakes and exhaust systems, that should be intuitive. And if its not intuitive for you, you better start doing alot of reading. Oh yeah if no one knows yet and I confirmed with the publisher that they are updating Corky Bell's book toward the end of the year(2005).
