The turbo is finished and now on with the tuning...

Hey, this is Joseph Davis, posting under Todd's account... using his computer. Been spending the day on Todd's GS-R, here's what we've gotten done to day.

First, we had to modify the DSM 450cc to be non-OBD specific as we had no OBD0 clips.

Test fitted the manifold + Precision SC61
http://www.redpepperracing.com/galle.../aan.sized.jpg

We all love Ken @ cheapturbo, but he sent four bolt turbine flanges instead of five bolt ones. Here in the trailerpark, we don't really worry about ---- like that.
http://www.redpepperracing.com/galle.../aao.sized.jpg

Todd got the wastegate flange positioned, ported, and welded on...

While I humped the downpipe. (Todd is forcing me to post this pic of my ugly mug)
http://www.redpepperracing.com/galle.../aar.sized.jpg

Tomorrow we finish his water-air IC...
http://www.redpepperracing.com/galle.../aaq.sized.jpg

... buy the coolant circulation pump ($20 MallWart junk), and set up the AC condensor as a radiator for the water-air coolant, and finish the install.

:>

Awesome work... you stayed about as busy as I did today ;)

Feels good to come in, take a nice shower, get a nice cold drink (dr pep), maybe some ice cream.. watch TV, chat on HMT.. fun fun 8)

btw, I like the air/water setup... make sure you get some pics up of that when it's done.. I had the same idea with the AC condensor... think it will work good?

hmm thats a good idea mounting the exh towards the drivers side.. i might do that on mine.

nice setup btw!

Thanks guys.. I'm not sure who makes the excaliber manifold but its not me.. Thats one of my own design.. Its coming together well, hopefully by early afternoon today we will be in the process of chipping and tunning it. ;D

Re:w00t! What I did today

You made that? Nice work man. Seriously. It looks like a Lovefab manifold. He sells one that look like that for $500 plus shipping. http://www.lovefab.com/

Anyways, good luck with it. Everything looks nice. Post more pics when it's done. :)

Downpipe lengthened to a mutant extent and O2 bung fitted. The back half will be cut off and turned into a test pipe later, when more stainless pipe, cat, + muffler rolls in for the rest of the exhaust.
http://www.redpepperracing.com/galle.../abd.sized.jpg

Got the car running right now, 6 psi non-IC. We lacked the fittings to do the water-air IC immediately as everything we found at Homeboy Depot would have looked like complete crap and not have been very functional (hanging 1/2 lb of steel adapters off of threaded thin wall aluminum sheet is not a good idea). Tuning atm with the Uberdata tuner... glitchy but seems to be working pretty well - nice safe rich (.975-1.080 regular O2 volts under boost) and .85 deg/psi retard.

Need to go wire up my wideband right now; forgot half the cables at home in NC like a dumbass, have to redo all that stuff.

Hey this is Todd. I got some more pics of the finished (for now) setup. Btw I have sold the manifolds before but I think I might be holding off for a while. I also sold them for $500. They are a royal bitch to weld up and I'm gonna spend some time making some nice low buck stainless log type manifolds. They honestly work very well. Well on to the pics.

First up is a pic of my car. Yeah she is filthy..

Close up of the RFL.. Can't hear it over the open downpipe.. :P How do you like the AEM.. ;D
http://www.redpepperracing.com/galle.../abn.sized.jpg

Hope you guys enjoy. We should have a pretty decent tune on it tonight and I will post up some ballpark quarter mile speeds soon. FWIW it did about 99mph on the stock speedo before.

Re:w00t! What I did today

I dig the manifold. Nice job. Do you guys do house calls? :P

One thing I can't understand is how you can't hear the RFL? Even with an open downpipe mine would shatter glass.

My one colpaint would be the air filter location. That thing is going to be sucking hot ass air from the radiator. :-X

Re:w00t! What I did today

Todd spent most of the day watching me screw around with the wideband... the crappy thing isn't working; I'm halfway through troubleshooting it right now. Building the harness for it took FOREVER, too. But it's industrial quality, should ast forever.

Well, we pulled a little more fuel out, running 0.960-0.980 through most of WOT and boost, got the idle mostly tuned by nose/quality. The SC61 is putting out a few psi by 3500 rpm and has full boost (6-7 psi) before 4000 psi... we lowered VTEC from 4400 to 4000 as it was a harsh transition instead of smooth - I kinda think we could go a few hundred rpm lower and be fine. Power seems to jump in VTEC due to more airflow.

We can hear the RFL now... the car is just plain loud so sometimes it is hard to miss. :>

----, I'm tired.

LOL, JD... Dont worry brother, I dont have the sexiest hair line myself.. I just said ---- it, and shave it down now.. ;D

I'm really digging this entire setup, Todd you do nice work, and I'm really jealous that you have a SC61 on your car. That ------- thing can make some good power if its properly tuned. 4500vtec? JD, get that thing on a dyno, your loosing big power when its set that low, I normally have them set 55-6000 range.

Todd 07-01-2003 01:18 AM

Re:w00t! What I did today

Todd does the best work, yes.

I know the butt dyno is worthless compared to a real dyno, but the whole car literally jerked forward at 4400 VTEC and now the transition is smooth at 4000 with good power at that point and up. Given the fact the AF isn't nailed down yet, due to crusty wideband, the VTEC point can and will change.

As far as the now blown out of proportion hairline thing... I haven't cared in a couple years. I still get the same number of ugly bitches, plain bitches, and sexy bitches adoring me as always. My take on it? There are a whole lot of tasteless women in the world.

Re:w00t! What I did today

Hey its Todd. Thanks for the compliments and suggestions. Jeff- I think VTEC really needs to be that low. I know everyone says you need it to be higher but... If you think about it I am already cramming 6psi into the manifold when it opens. Why not have more lift to get that air in. When VTEC turned on at 4400rpm it was like hitting a nitrous button. At 4000 its alot smoother.

One other thing about the turbo. There is viturally no Lag. Any time you hit the gas the car just accelerates, I kind of expected to have it hesitate for a spilt second while the turbine caught up. Not the case. I really like the precision turbos. I recomend them to anyone.

Also this is not the final setup. In a few days to a week I hope to have a front mount intercooler and the air filter will be reworked. That was a temporary fix so I didn't suck any small children into the car. I already had an R1 try to race.. I lost. :(

i was always told turbo cars benfeit from low lift. not vtec.i am not downtalking vtec at all it just seems that vtec does more for you car n/a

HMT-Admin 07-01-2003 03:40 PM

Re:The turbo is finished and now on with the tuning...

Put it on a dyno, money says you will have a huge dip in power with vtec set that low.. Trust me... me and beau did the whole butt dyno thing years ago, and we were all about setting vtec around 4-4500 ish, not only does it sound cooler it does feel smoother. But the dyno really proved us wrong. What cams are you using and are you using cam gears?

2000vsm 07-01-2003 06:37 PM

Re:The turbo is finished and now on with the tuning...

vtec at high boost levels fucks up at the crossover.. there's just too much stuff going on with the air, fuel and lift.duration... that's why people use the B18A for turboed civics or tegs... no vtec = nice.

Since i have a vtec engine, i don't know what i'm going to do.. maybe just deal with it

Todd 07-01-2003 08:52 PM

Re:The turbo is finished and now on with the tuning...

Jeff, you're right - time to hit the dyno, or at least hook up a G meter to datalogging so we can calc how hard the car pulls at such rpm and such gear.

The GS-R is stock except for turbooooooooo, no cams or gears.

Turbo likes, traditionally, high lift and no/little overlap (in single cam world, referred to as LSA; lobe seperation angle). Given that this is a tubular manifold and peaky turbine with efficient GT series compressor, I think you'd find the engine behaves more like a traditional NA engine, where some overlap works pretty well. The way the car jumps forward with VTEC at 4400 rpms, on transition into VTEC, demonstrates that this setup likes the overlap.

Anybody with a little DIY-wideband experience I can bother? I'm getting 3.4 volts in open air instead of 4.0, and while we have the car tuned (according to wideband) to a 11.8-12.1 AF under boost, there's a good cloud of soot from the exhaust under boost that makes me think the mix is way too rich still.
