Transferring a title

Just a quick question. Basically, the seller of the car I half-bought is having problems with getting out of work early enough to go to a notary to transfer the title of a car into my name. It seems from what I've read on about 3 sites about transferring titles (one from state.pa.us) that the seller fills in the odometer reading, their address, sign it, and then the seller needs their part notarized. It sounds like they can just fill in those other parts on their own, then I can go and get it transferred on my own. Is this true? If so I'll just do that. 8)

I've sold 10 cars and never had to get anything notarized.

I used to live in PA and what I would do is go to a small business notary and have them sign their part and leave the title with the person and say that the buyer will come in at a certain time to take care of their part and they will pay for everything. In PA if the car has a PA title you have to go to a notary.

All I ever had to do was sign the title in front of the notary, have the notary stamp it and be on my way. Most banks have notaries and I'm sure the guy has enough time to go to the bank. Tell him to stop being so ------- lazy and get off his fatass and get the ------- title signed. ::) I hate when people lag on ---- like that. :3

That'd work great if I was the one selling the car :P

Doc, notaries IN banks? wtf? ??? :o That's sorta odd, notaries are little businesses on their own here, but I'm sure you might be able to do something in the bank, never heard of that here though...

If I can just get him to sign the crap and then take it to a notary the next day that'd be great.

i always thought the point of the notary was that they stamped something they witnessed being signed, etc, not something you brought in thats already been signed/filled out

You don't have to be at the notary to sign anything. You sign ---- later on your own. The car owner who's name is on the title has to sign in front of the notary, not you.

That website was wrong. I know it said about the seller; i was saying it as if he were to sign everything then hand it over. That site did specify that the buyer had to be in front of the notary.

you both have to sign in front of the notary in pa, the notary is the one that can get a new title issued to you from the pa dmv

Sin, just call a notary and tell them what's up. Most I've seen will let the owner(seller) come in and sign, then they will hold the title for 24hrs for you to come in and sign your part. If you don't show, I don't remember what happens: the title gets voided I think, then the original owner may have to apply for a lost title? pure guess on that last part, but I do know it was something that you didn't want to happen last I checked.

Thats basically what I said in my post earlier. Just have them go to the notary, sign it and leave it there, you go when you get time and finish the transaction. I have done that many times.

My problem lies in the fact of getting him to that notary. lol, but it should be good to go tomorrow...

Serious? That's ------- stupid. In AZ all you have to do is have the seller sign and notarize the title. He can then hand the title to whoever he wants and they are responsible after that. I've signed and notarized titles before selling a vehicle just because I knew I was going to sell it within the next 30 days. Makes it easy for the buyer. Just hand him the title and have him sign a bill of sale. California doesn't even require a notary. Just a forged signature on the title and you're good to go. :l
