yea, if the gears were done then most likely the shaft was out, but also i forgot to mention the pain with pulling the shaft is that you have to pull them basically one at a time, if your lucky and they arent that tight you may be able to get 3 of the 4 depending on how the shaft is sitting, then roll the shaft over a bit to get enough throw to get the next one out, i'm not 100% sure on an 88 i think the exhaust may be a bit differant then mine, but if need be just take out the ones you can get at then drop the car in nutral roll for about 3-5" and then snag the last one or two

this thread made me think of the truck i saw hauling a small truck on the highway. had the front on the dolly and the rear was on the ground. the truck was running cause i could see smoke comeing out of the exaust. it was funny. too bad i didn't have my camera.
