Default Top speed in jeep 4x4?

Just wondering what's the fastest your supposed to go when your in full-time 4x4 in a 91 jeep cherokee? Somebody told me not to go over 30 mph with it, but i don't believe that...i've had it rockin' up to 45 so far, but i don't want to blow out the transfer case cause it's my winter beater and it has to last until spring

i don`t know how all the 4x4 works but back then when i work at a car rental, I was driving a Exploer and tried to shift the thing from H 2wd to H4wd while the car was moving at 40ish mph, and to my suprise it made this loud nasty BAN noise from the rear diff. and it feels like all 4 wheels are going to lock up but didn`t LOL. may be i fucked something up?
