Re: tools that you need to have

I depends on what you're doing. Obviously, you need a basic mechanics tool kit, but I think the biggest thing I would recommend is an air compressor and a good twin hammer impact gun. I just did the brakes on my Acura TL and ended up breaking a 1/2" breaker bar trying to get the axle nut off. I got an earthquake 1/2" impact gun at harbor freight and had it off in about 4 seconds. Knowing if you're going to use air tools in advance is important, because you can start off with impact sockets and use them manually until you have air tools. That will save quite a bit of $$.

why were you taking the axle nut off to change brakes ???

Sounds like the TL has to have the hub pressed off to change rotors.

It's a 97 TL 2.5 and Joseph nailed it. The hub has to be pressed out to remove the rotor, which is why I now own a nice new 12 ton press that doubles nicely as a firewood splitter.

you don't need a press its the same brakes that come on the accords, you need a set of balls and a slide hammer

Re: tools that you need to have

swivel sockets, stubby/long handled wrenches, metric line wrenches, good quality 3/8 ratchet (with low º rotation per click, makes tight spaces 10x faster to work in) um.. brass/rubber mallet, gasket material

Eh, Sorry to break it to you son. I went at it with a 16 lb slide hammer for about 3 hours. Then my neighbor and I went at it for another hour using the slide hammer and a 16 lb sledge. Nobody was getting this thing out with a slide hammer. I wore a pair of welding gloves and I had bruises all over my hands when I finally stopped. I also tried using 4 longer bolts and an air hammer as the Wagner technical bulllitin shows, that didn't budge anything. When I did finally get it to break with the 12 lb press, I broke the rotor in half. Then the hub snapped so loud, I thought I broke the press. I had to take a wire wheel to it and grease it with white lithium to get it back in using the press.

I don't know. I've only had the car a little over a year. If they were replaced, it was a long damn time ago. I swapped on some cross-drilled rotors and hawk hps pads. It stops much better now. I also changed the outer tie rod ends while I was in there so I know when they were last changed. AKA I fucked up the boots with a cheap HF pickle fork ;) because of that, I got an OEM fork kit on ebay with 3 fork ends, a screw on attachment for an air hammer and a manual one and it made a night and day difference. I got the ball joints out with 3 whacks with a little 6 lb sledge and didn't ---- up the boots at all. That set is HIGHLY recommended. The forks just sing when I tap them on the end with a hammer. Best $30 I spent during this "project".
