Tools ETC...

I am building my collection of tools, engine hoist etc for my new project car. I am new to this. Looking for suggestions on what to start with, good brands etc. Thanks guys!

Re: Tools ETC...

crafstman, snap-on-dildo, etc.

JonDouglas 07-15-2006 01:10 AM

Re: Tools ETC...

Its Strap-On not Snap-On-Dildo. ::)

SK and MAC make some very nice tools as well. Unless you are ging to do alot of wrenching or you have lots of money to throw around then Crapsman is probably your best bet.

Re: Tools ETC...

Find old Snap on tools; yardsales, freecycle, buddies tool box

Take them to the snap on truck

Say " this shits broke"

Leave with new tools

Works every time :)

Find out which craftsmen tools have the lifetime warranty and buy 'em. :)

Re: Tools ETC...

normal craftsmen ---- sucks. the pro line i have heard is ok. Snap-on/mac/matco/S&K for the win. I stick to snap on hand tools and mac air tools. Even the kmart brand bench top feels and works nicer (IMO) than the basic craftsman line.

Standard Crapsman wrenches and rachets suck balls and are very uncomfortable to use. Gotta love that changing direction with a stiff breeze pos rachet.

haha my friend bought one of there tool sets they were all ------ colored too. those got a lifetime warrenty. sucked though i broke his reducer socket when he first bought it because i was standing on the wrench and put alittle to much stress on it i guess lol, but all the sockets hold just fine with the crap i sent there way.

Re: Tools ETC...

only tools I need:
- flat head screwdriver
- hammer
- vice grip

if you can't get it to work with those, it can't be done.

Don't buy Craftsman, got it. I'll take a look at Snap on, Mac, and S&K. What about for jacks, crawlers, and engine hoists any particular ones I should scout out? Thanks guys.

Re: Tools ETC...

I love habor freight and the flea market. I hate black oxide colored tools, I have a hard time spotting them while wrenching. I like the garage sale strap-on idea I'll have to give it a shot...

Re: Tools ETC...

Those of you who think craftsman stuff is decent should try some snap-on tools sometime. My Snap-on 1/4" drive ratchet will hold more torque than a craftsman 1/2", and rounding off rusted/overtorqued bolts and nuts is not even a concern with good quality stuff.

The benchtop stuff does have a much better feel too. My first toolset, and the one I keep at home is benchtop, I love that stuff. My dad has mostly craftsman, and my brother is a tech at sears, so he has all craftsman, they both steal my benchtop tools. I don't care too much though, I bring tools from work home.

Your BOX is bigger than mine. :-X

I don't think Strap-On puts their name on a set o rachet wrenches yet. Man, I bought a set of swivel head Gearwreches and I think my standard Snap-on wrenches are feeling left out.

Gearwrenches FTW. Unless you really need to put some major torque to it.

Re: Tools ETC...

I must agree gear wrenches do kick ass, I have the double box ends, the swivel ends and stubbys. Snap-on does make ratcheting ones but they suck.

Re: Tools ETC...

I though they put the Blue Point name on them.

Oh yeah, Snap-on air impact wrenches are not worth the price IMO. I have a MAC that whoops up on the IM6100 and cost 100 less.

Gear wrenches are one of my favourite tools :y Craftsmen tools are fine i used them when working as a mechanic as i didnt feel like getting raped by strapon for 20G.I bought all my specialty tools from Snap on as well as there digital tourqe wrench and mainly craftsmen for hand tools with some other brands as well like Grey,Western,Ultra Pro [good impact guns] and a few Jet ones.A freind of mine has a Husky set at home and they are pretty decent for what he paid.

none of snap-on's air tools seem up to par compared to mac air tools. I almost bought a set of blue point ratchet wrenches last week, but am for sure monday. Just found out I got $250 for getting 4th place at national VICA.

sorry but I hate every tool ever made by ultrapro >:( I'm rocking a IR titanuim quite impact right now 2135ti I think, best impact ever. I had a snap-on shockwave before that and a few others.

+1+1

You mean to tell me that you have never benn working in a cramped area and had that big ass limp wisted teardrop lever snag on something that isn't even permanently mounted (wirre harness, vacuum line, fuel line) and had it change direction inn mid swing. I also hate the pushbutton release.

I guess I am retarded because I don't like shitty tools that create more work for me.

Yes it has the same type of switch for direction but it is about 1/3 the size and it actually hase a good amount of preload so it doesn't move unless you want it to.

:werd: a broken tool can easily cost you more than what a good tool would have.

kuroko 07-15-2006 08:39 PM

Re: Tools ETC...

So I ended up with a mechanics tool set from benchtop, a engine hoist/mount/level balancer from AFF, and some random 3 ton racheting car jacks to start with.

Re: Tools ETC...

ratchet wrenches own, get some of those.

i also strongly suggest that if you're anywhere near the CT area, that you stop by and do a tour of hotrex's shop and pocket a few things.
