TomToms dont work very well, I've used one all over from Tacoma to Blaine. Go with a Garmin iQue (I think that is the series), it worked extremely well - even in downtown Seattle - and you can get it for a very reasonable price.

The verdict is in!

This thing is great. Never have I had less than 6 satellites covering me (usually 8, but not really sure how that compares to others in the <$300 price range.) A couple of routes that I have asked for, that I know where I am going anyways, have been a little over-complicated, but it got me there none-the-less. I would have to say that my only complaint is the lack of a compass orientaion on this thing, although I can see why it wasn't included. But for me, I would like it there, even if it is telling me when to make what turns.

I haven't had any connection issues at all, but that's probably largely due to the fact that I am in Sothern California. Deep in downtown L.A. or up in the Foothills, it's got every street name, and every housenumber down pat. I've also discovered a few new restaurants, thanks to its built in databank of gas stations, restaurants, park and recreational areas, and many other "Points of Interest" this thing displays for you. For me, this thing is great.
