Threw a rod last night.

Well, I expected it to happen.. just not this soon. After 200 miles of being turbocharged my D15B7 said '---- that ----'. #2 rod broke up top creating a baseball sized hole in the block and taking the main girdle with it. I'm not really mad or anything, not like that was a prime engine.

There was no warning when it happened, it was running really strong. I was just out for a joyride and I heard *CLUNK* and then pieces of metal hit the road :o No detonation or anything was taking place.. it was running great.

So my question is: Where should I go from here? I have another D15B2 in the basement that was running fine... but I know its going to do the same ----.

Which of the D series is the strongest.. because I know what I should be doing is looking for a A6, Z6 or Y8... I'm just unsure which is best or if they're all the same?

My D15B7 was a mini-me, and I guess those twig ass rod's don't like 10.0:1 compression and boost for too long eh :)

how much boost? pics?

yeah how much boost, what type of management, we need some info please

Re:Threw a rod last night.

6-7psi (sometimes it would creep to 8.. but it wasnt at this time), Uberdata as the managment. I can take pictures tonight, I have to yank the turbo/mani off.. the hole is behind it.

Re:Threw a rod last night.

you need rods and pistons. stock d series internals are not the strongest units. if you want to go mini me again do like i gig, and get a mr gasket mls headgasket. i dropped my compression to 8.8:1 with the srp pistons and crower rods. ill be pushing 16-18 psi

Re:Threw a rod last night.

well the compression id say is killing you, you gotta keep it down or that extra pressure cylinders upon each explosion is hammering your ---- back down. And if your timing is a bit off, that can really ---- some ---- up.
Another possibility is that clutch i sold you was grabbing to hard, your motor couldnt hang with the clutch ;)

Re:Threw a rod last night.

I agree that the mini-me is what was the deathblow. I'm going to plop in the D15B2 I have.. it was running fine. I'll just use it as-is w/stock head. I just wanna drive the car again... know what I mean? I don't expect the B2 to last long either, but I'm in the middle of a F22 build and I really can't afford to divert any money into D internals.. it would just delay my main goals.

So much money into everything else that its too fun not to drive :)

Heh, ... if you can help it do something before it does. I have a spare motor, but ruining a good block that coulda been used to be sleeved sucks... :(

You're a LIL better off being 1.6L though.. I was fucked from the get-go.

Ya.. and prices on the same performance parts are 50% more.

I just threw a B in I had kickin' around, and I've been doing mild maintence on it, and ---- is massively more expensive. It's a crock of ----. >:(

projekteg, i got a 12 pack says when you get your turbo on, i will beat you on the dyno

Re:Threw a rod last night.

I actually have a B20 in the shed sitting around, but it has a auto tranny and a giraff (sp) intake mani on it. it woud cost me a lot to wiggle that thing into my Civic.. it just doesnt make financial sense at this time. Not to mention I don't even own a turbo manifold for it.

damn how u get your compression so low and u still r fast?

Re:Threw a rod last night.

crxallmotor, i wont even waste my time responding to that question...... its common knowlege boost like lower compression.

JB-weld the block and throw another rod and piston in there ;D Trailor park style

its still good its still good!!! 3 cyl that ----

Re:Threw a rod last night.

Damn, if you were near me I'd even donate some time to TIG weld a patch on there... :)

Seriously though, here is what I'm doing. D16A6 with Z6 pistons and Z6 head with LS rods. This gives you a CR somewhere in the 8's. Don't remember exactly, maybe 8.6 I think. The LS rods are better than the pencil think stockers and the Z6 head gives me mad veetack!
