Testpipe?

Has anyone ever passed inspection with a testpipe. Does it make the car a lot louder? I live in NJ but I'm not sure about the exhaust laws, does anyone know? Will you seen a big improvement in turbo lag and HP or TQ?

Re:Testpipe?

not sure about the turbo lag, etc as my car is still N/A
but I'll tell you that this upgrade frees up some ponies, esp if your Cat was as old and clogged as mine!

The only problem with mine is that it's soo damn raspy now =/
I'm gonna stick a Cherry Bomb inline somewhere to try to quiet that ---- down some

Re:Testpipe?

----... cause I did....so its just the muffler blockn the noise now.... when i rev it it sounds like Johny trans car... all ricey... I have a small aftermarket resonator im gonna put when i get 3in piping... cause itll be way to loud if i dont. (and here in california the cops are anxious to pull you over for any little thing)

Re:Testpipe?

yeah, I'm gonna try putting a cherry bomb on there instead of a resonator... and see how that sounds...

Re:Testpipe?

i live in nj too....the test pipe shouldnt make it that much louder, and if you're lucky and your car runs clean, you might actually pass the emissions test, but in nj, i know they sometimes look under the car with a mirror to see if theres a cat there...so my advice is to put your cat back on for your inspection..(i think there might actually be a hefty fine for not having one)

Re:Testpipe?

I got pulled over 5 times and got 2 tickets, the other 3 times they let me go, because it was just too loud, i had headers, test pipe, 2.25 inch pipe and mufler, wich wasn't too good because i did not have anything to create backpressure, but you could not even talk or listen to music in the car. I put a resonator back in the line and now cops don't say anything, it only sounds when your pulling out or slam the pedal, but when your just cruising it's only a low sound. One of the cops told me it sounded like an old lawn mower, before. Performance wise, it did feel better after I removed the cat. Legally, I read somewhere that in Florida you could get a ticket for up to $10,000, which I don't believe, but it was in the newspaper or something.

Just a suggestion...I have a 98' Eclipse GS (420a) it has a GReddy Headers (4 to 1) a 3" cat from http://mufflertech.com/ It gives a sweet as sound, sounds very tuned. Under 95 db, but still I have been pulled over ten times in it. :-(

3" exhaust on a non-turbo? or is it just the cat that is that big....the page didnt load for me...is that a real cat or a resonator that people are passing off as a "racing cat"?

The cat is 3" big, thus providing more flow. The catback exhaust is 2 1/2. The cat is off a Ford Expedition, and will provide tons of of flow for a four cylinder. They "said" it would pass emissions, but I dunno. Try http://www.testpipe.com

forcedinductionz: do you think 2.5" is a good size for the nt eclipse?...im asking because a friend and i will be using the same size tomorrow when we build his exhaust and we were a little affraid it'd be too big for a non-turbo with minimal mods...just wondering

That depends, With the bigger size piping your going to get more top end power. As you probably know NT Eclipse's are not known for their outstanding torque. It will shift your power band from about 4K - 7k. Off the line you'll lose a little, but on the freeway they car MOVES. I am video taping my car in action today, I'll post the movies today sometime, so you can check it out for yourself.

Re:Testpipe?

ok thanks a lot...ill pass the info on...with the mods he has, he has plenty of torque for now and takes cars off the line, but usually gets passed, so some top end hp should help

Tyler's car is slow. HA HA HA! I raced him after work. His exhaust sounds good though.
