I just swapped to a new HD in my computer. The old one would just continually reset when loading windows. Now I want to get a few files off my old HD. I load it up as a slave to the new HD. I can see the documents folder I need to get to but it says that access is denied. I am guessing this is because I had a login password on the old HD.

Any help would be great.

Bad drive maybe? (so bad you cant gain access to files) Hopefully thats not the case but lets see what others say

login as admin, right click folder, security tab, give administrator all permissions and save.

I see nothing like that. I don't see where I can adjust the permissions of the folder.

head down to Micro Center in St Louis Park, grab a 3.5" HD USB Case, plug it in, get all the files you want, format the old HD, sell old HD on Craigslist, return 3.5" HD USB Case to Micro Center and tell them it didnt work, get money back, buy beers.

this is hmt not rip people out of money.

anyways, if you couldnt access the files as a slave drive, there may be permission files like said above. a 3.5" bay is a good idea, but after hearing it reset itself like you said the drive is toasted, or either the os is on the bunk. good luck in retrieving files. buy a external hdd and always make a backup of all your important files like i do. ;)

I have everything that is really crucial backed up. This is just some stuff that is replaceable, but would be easier to just get this way. I will try the external drive bay I guess. I am guessing the HD is junk, but it may just be the OS. Best way to do it is a re-format though. Which I will be doing after I get eh documents off it.

Your HD was not the problem, you had one of your hive (registry) files corrupted. If you had Recovery Console installed and backups of your hive files I could walk you through it... but then, if you had that, you wouldn't need me.

Do a nice netsearch on NTFS file security... you will probably have to download something like Hiren's Boot CD that will allow you to smurf NTFS and recover files.

you should just be able to open up my computer, right click the drive with your needed documents and make sure the settings under the security tab allow full control for everything, can you get to anything else on that drive ( is it just one folder thats locked down?) .
