Stock bottom end good for 450+ HP.
Unlike most Honda's, you can actually carry more than one friend. And some gear.

It's the ultimate sleeper.
Too bad it's still FWD.

944 turbos are pretty cool, a close friend of mine has one. they respond very well to early modifications, as they have some problems from the factory that limit them. first thing you would want to do is get a new WG. the factory one opens VERY early in an effort to provide a N/A type power band. just that alone turns the car into a whole different animal. with just a WG, chip and 3" turbo back they're pretty fast on the highway and i can personally tell you they'll run to 170+.

if you like to drag race, you probably wont enjoy it very much. next to impossible to launch worth a ----.

Power: 217 hp @ 5800 rpm [1988+TurboS]- 250hp
162 kW @ 5800 rpm
Torque: 243 lb. ft. @ 3500 rpm[1988+TurboS]-258lb.ft
330 Nm @ 3500 rpm
Weight: 1360 kg
2999 lb

0-60 mph:
~0-100 km/h: 5.5 s [TurboS]-5.4
Quartermile: 14.5 s
Top Speed: 245 km/h

Sounds alright but nothing spectacular. For what parts probably cost etc I would say it isnt worthwile. The 1988+ Turbo S models sound decent with more power, lsd, larger brakes etc.

Good info. I was thinking they had 250hp so I guess I was looking at an '88 S t get that info. Definately a little heavy .... 14.5 1/4 kinda lame ...

I guess the goal would be a sexy car that hauls *** RWD or AWD style .... has ~400whp+ and turns out high 12 sec 1/4s or better. Preferably more impressive to roll up in than a honda/dsm ... done for under $10k .... any ideas

I'd go 240SX.I have always liked them and Im doing a SR swap in one as a winter project for a local and I really want one now.$10k would be enough to build a nice one and they handle well, look good IMO and it wouldnt be very hard to put one in the 12's.Either do a SR swap and upgrade turbo or boost the KA.The other option would be a RX7 TurboII but if you are not a rotary guy it probably wouldnt be a good choice as you need to know what your doing with one or it will be unreliable etc.If you arent set on a import I would buy a Mustang like a 96 style and boost it.The fox body ones 87/88-92/3 I dont know the exact years are a awesome starting point and it takes nothing to put one in the 12's.Alot of people dont like the looks of them and the interior is brutal but there is nothing easier to build a killer street car from.

I'd really like an RX7 but I would want a really nice one and I am thinking I would be in the $15k+ price range .... and so far I think the Porsche still has the vote for pimpness ...

You silly, silly monkey.

Back on topic...

The 944 can be had cheaply because they were Porsche's attempt at a mass-market car. As others have said, unless you have a trust fund somewhere, the engines absolutely suck. You'd be better off with an older 911, with it's classic body style and more workable engine. It's not a stop-light smoker, so don't go drag racing it, but the overall balance and handling will win you over. (The 928 beats it for sexiness, but the repairs will kill ya....)

Even a relatively simple old-school 911 will still cost a gonad or two every couple of years for maintainence if you don't do the work yourself. A friend had the engine in his 77 911 track car rebuilt a couple of years ago: $7,000....

He learned to do the work himself
