Synthetic Oil...Bad?
I know this has probably been discussed before but i was never clear on it. Why is synthetic oil supposably not good for motors (say a 90's honda) but is good for the turbo? i know for the turbo its good but why do people say its not good for your motor and would rather have to get a new turbo, than a new motor? why is it bad? i've always heard its ok to upgrade to a synthetic oil at any time..?! whats the deal?? ???

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
synthetic oil is a man made oil that as it improves could possibly be the most perfect oil.
i run it in my car without a problem. after many years of buying regular oil. the regular can "cook" in your turbo and turn to sludge, or harden under the high heats. the synthetic is not Supposed to.. but it is not perfect, so it will also, but depending on how good the oil is, it will "cook" less. for n/a it comes down to how much you want to pay for oil. for really high temps, like going through a turbo, i would get synthetic.. but its not completely neccessary. |
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
oh i dont know how many times this has been covered... so.
you might.. well more than likely will be told to use the almight search button ;) |
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
personally for my daily car I like nothing but synthetic, but on my hondas I've had, fossil is just fine for me.

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
Synthetic is suppose to have a higher break down rate so it can handle more abuse before it starts to break down. The combounds in it are also be able to get to spots that regular oil can't and lubricate it way better reduces friction which creates less heat and strain. I run it in my harley and my car never any problems.

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
I've run synthetic since I rebuilt my engine (break in period was with regular non-synthetic oil), and i've noticed that the synthetic seems to stay cleaner than the non-sythentic.

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
Its perfect for those of us who like to go 8k miles between oil changes. ::)

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
werd, people tell me that I could run the car 5k miles no problem with synthetic oil, but I'm a paranoid ass and would rather spend the extra 80 bones and change the oil ever 3k anyways.

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
I use synthetic and still change it every 3k 8)
|
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
I've been using it when I first got my car, inside of the engine is spotless no scraches or discoloring on the cams from daily extended 8.5k reving. I'd say use it its worth the money

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
i can get 6 quarts of regular oil for 1 quart of synthetic...
so... synthetic = bad, money = good ;) |
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
if your not a lazy ass(as alot of these people here are) and do your own oil changes(like me) go synthetic. i take it a step further and get the Mobil1 filter too. go to there site and read about it. it can filter out the aids virus. seriously. filters down to 10 microns @ 95%.
synthetic is bad for engine break in. |
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
I have always used regular Castrol GTX 10w30. I change my oil a lot though, probably every 1,000 miles, give or take a few depending on how hard I drive my car.

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
AC Delco is what I usually buy, they are like 4 bucks. I would use a Wix or Purolator also, just as long as it's not a Fram/Penzoil.
|
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
thats what i used to use. the Pure one purolator.
|
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
synthetic doesnt lose its viscosity. regular oil gets thin and watery after repeated use.
|
Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
well, yeah...i know that synthetic is a better quality and i always use it on my turbo crx. mobil 1 full synthetic and usually a K&N or Mobil 1 oil filter. I still change my oil like every 2500 miles. i dont even go to 3K before i change it now. i know its more money but i'd rather be safe than sorry. why do people cheap out on oil...thats like the blood of the engine!?!?! does it matter? i mean if you do it like BBKA then thats different cuz at least he changes it like every other week ::) and why do people say its BAD for the motor? i've heard that before on here...

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
i don't like synthetic in a turbo car, although it may not 'cook' and sludge up in your turbo, oil temps are usually a lot hotter with synthetic. i would rather replace my turbo than my engine. advanced auto parts 10w40 3.98 a gallon and purolator every 2k. go ahead and waste your money or syn, i'm sure it's doing a lot.

Re:Synthetic Oil...Bad?
be warned, there have been a couple of NEW (03-04) BMW's that have been coming back for sludging of synthetic oil. reason being is if your car doesnt meet a cetain heat it will sludge up in your motor, its nasty and looks like syrup. we have to do a 6 step flush to clear it out.
10w30 synthetic is what i use on my 91. no problems and i dont change it for 7500 miles as honda suggests :) unless im raping my car alot. and for filters go -> i would never use anything BUT an OEM Factory filter. you should cut apart a k&n or pennzoil filer and cut open an oem one, the differences are AMAZING. aftermarket filters have very little filtration. |

When I first got my car, I checked the air filter, it looked fine, but I decided to buy new OEM ones anyways, and when I replaced them, what a difference, the oem onw was twice as thick as the ones in there, in my case I would say it was worth the 80+ for the filters. |
