Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
me and some buddies might go in on buying an old beater truck to tow and carry stuff around in...what are some good choices? preferibly late 80s early 90s, I know price will vary, but relatively under $1000, and preferibly EFI, but I personally don't care really. should be able to pull anything from a CRX to 4th gen Maxima...any thoughts? any thoughts on the old Pathfinder or Nissan 4x4s as far as towing ability? since I'm pretty familiar with the VG motor maintence and repairs would be pretty easy for me. any other suggestions?

Re:Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
get an old chevy van.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=39411 we used to pull wood with a van like this that we bought for 300 bucks, and from a junkyard. glass packs and a rattle-can paint job suited it just fine. ;) |
Re:Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
I looked into getting an erly 90s truck for a while and then gave up cause I realized that the only thing I could get for a good price (sub 1200ish) was going to be an american hog. That van is pretty pimp though

Re:Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
I bought my 1991 S10 for $1000. I had to put some money into it, but it seems to be a decent truck for the money. I towed a tandem axle flatbed with a gigantic load of ---- on it a couple hundred miles with no problems. It's got the 4.3 and an automatic/overdrive. I can get pretty good mileage on the highway with the tailgate down. I bitch about how ugly it is, but for the most part it's been a good truck for the money I have into it. I can do burnouts for miles. ;D

Re:Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
definently one of my top choices, especially that Chevy!! and the S10 was also another thoguht in my mind as well...just towing around that 3000++ lb Maxima(fully decked show car) might be a chore for it though...the van isn't a bad idea either as long as it can pull the weight. I guess now that I have some clue of what to look for, I can figure out their towing abilities.
thanks guys, any more suggestions post 'em

*story,
a guy at the track has an old chevy van, similar to that one, he pulls a honda with a full tool box in the back of the van. he says its not fast, but it pulls, so thats the idea right? pretty much anything over a 1/4 ton will pull a 3000lb car. |

Re:Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
crx or civic might be alright for towing, but don't be trying to offroad that ----, I got my civic stuck in the desert saturday night, ------- low ass clearances, the bottom is all scraped up now.

Re:Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
LOL!!! ;D
guys I was also suggested by some others to look into some 1st gen Dodge Dakotas: "Also dont forget the Dakota's, They pretty much have 1/2 to 3/4 ton drivetrains on them, and the 46re (tranny) and optional 3.92's (rearend) make it quite a nice little rig and you can pick them up cheap (first gen)." sounds decent too huh?...thanks for all the ideas, I think I have enough to go on, now to make a choice. |
Re:Suggestions for a good beater truck for towing...
I like sccaeg's Van idea. My former step-dad picked up one for $100, it had a 305 with a 700R4 tranny and was in really good shape. Look around, you'll find a good deal ;)
