Sucky day at the junkyard

Went to the local U pull it junkyard in Philadelphia yesterday. I found this STD manifold on an old 4 spd civic. I paid $35 to go in and take as much as I could carry! I got a bunch of piping, some assorted older civic parts but after standing outside in the freezing cold for 2 hours I couldn't get the freaking STD manifold off. It wouldn't budge, and it wasn't like they were going to help me take the stuff I needed. (U pull it) Well, that was my suck day at the junkyard.

bring your craftsman socket and tools along with a mallet or a hammer. I took apart an entire d16z6 with those tools.

Good luck next time.

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

It was wet and cold, not much room to move around on the ground and nothing to jack it up with. In other words, no, didn't get those two bolts. That was why I couldn't get it.

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

there was no need to get under the car for those......

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

How else could I have done it? I took off every bolt on top and it came loose off the head but would not budge off the exhaust, i pryed for like an hour.

if u didnt take those off it will never budge. u got all the exhaust bolts to the head, 4 to the exhaust and theres two more underneath the manifold bolted on with brackets. after that its just a matter of a few jiggles and its free. ;D

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

That's a weird system. I've never been to a junkyard where they just charge you a flat rate for what you can carry. Me and Mike (88turbocrx) would be coming up if that were the case. (pulled 7 pg7 ecus and a t3 in one day) Sorry to hear about the day.

Parts 1 and 2 bolt to the manifold and to the block. If does aren't off it will not move.

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

I feel your pain man. I pulled an STD manifold. I took me 2 trips. The first time I only had about an hour before they closed so I got it unbolted from the head but couldn't get it off. The next day I went back and after unbolting the 2 that hold it to the block I realized that the engine was sitting on the ground on top of the downpipe. I had to get a jack under it to get it off so I would have enough room to unbolt the cat. Luckly I go to that jy quite a bit and stash useful stuff like pry bars and jacks when I find em.

sorry to hear about the bad day at the junk yard.

the std manifolds i pulled just had those brackets bolted to the manifold and not to the block. didn't have any problem getting off the car.

one yard by me does that every year i think (the flate rate thing)

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

I have to drive to Toronto for that flate rate deal. So far, I've only found a couple decent jy's in Buffalo. Most of em are a ripoff.

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

i have never hold of a flat rate u pull , so this means if u show up in the morning and pay like 40 bucks, then u go pull like a motor and whatever u want, as long as u are able to, u dont have to pay anything but the flat rate??

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

I heard about this one time, two guys payed like $60 each to get whatever they wanted, the story goes to say they got a b18 out and between the two carried outside so they paid $120 for the whole engine. Anything you can carry. Beleive it if you want, i'm not so sure it ever happened, but hey the story goes around. It is now like a legend ;)

Did you hear about the 88 turbo crx legend driving from Ca to washington and pulling up to Jeffs house and some hard revs
i quoted him to say
"Ls/Vtec came to my house, disrespected my crx"
That was it, he was afraid of the 185 tires for sure

PureCRXstacy where are you from? You can get 88-91 civic ---- really cheap from a few buffalo yards... too bad they are buried.

N. Buffalo Hertel/Elmwood area

I usually hit the yards on William. Skyway and J&J's are a ripoff. Which ones were you referring to?

I got that STD manifold at M&M.

Here is one such place in Canada.

Standard Auto Wreckers

I got a tb0382 with 0 shaft play and 3 sets of 86-88 accord powerwindow rails/motors/switches plus alot of other misc goodies for $45 cad which was $30 US at that time. The key is to take a roll of duct tape. I wrapped it all up with a piece of car carpet, made a shoulder strap with the duct tape and carried it all out without much of an issue. I had to do that becasue I had about 50 lbs of tools with me too.

Re:Sucky day at the junkyard

Everytime I go to the junkyard I make out I have pulled 3 ls motors and a d16z6 for all under 80 bucks. And selling them has been my income for a couple of weeks since this damn snow shafted me on work.Somtimes it pays off for for living in an area were most people hate imports
