Stupid File Sharing - Got busted by my internet provider.

COX@Home, my interweb provider sent me a cease and decist(sp?) letter on behalf of the Entertainment Software Association, claiming that I was sharing copyrighted materials. I was, the Hitman Blood Money Game ISO. So I moved it to another folder, and replied to the email, stating that I had removed the software. The whole big brother thing kind of irritated me, but the funny thing was that COX replied back and this was a part of their response...

Many people are not aware that most file sharing programs place downloaded files into a 'shared' directory that will allow others to see and download these files from them. We understand that you were likely not aware of this. We recommend that users of peer-to-peer networks disable the 'sharing' feature of their client to avoid future DMCA complaints.

I was amused to see that COX is basically providing it's users with instructions on how to avoid getting caught with copyrighted materials. They are basically saying... "We don't care if you download copyrighted materials with our service, and here is what you do to keep the DMCA assholes off your back when you do DL copyrighted materials."

NTC sent ---- like that to each of the computers on my network because according to them a single connection is intended for a single computer. Connecting more than one device to a connection is against their TOS. So what about my Wii? ---- that I'm not paying another $50 a month to have a connection for my Wii. I just ended up spoofing the MAC from one of the computers on the router to get connectivity back because those assholes cut off our service.

If you do what COX said, P2P file sharing dies. How can you download a file if everyone throws them in an unshared folder?

My new way of doing things is I only seed a torrent to a ratio of 1:1. I figured I only downloaded the file once so I should only upload the file once. It keeps trouble to a minimum.

I once got one also.
The two keys are registering known bad software keys / serials / hacked programs that phone home. and using bad p2p services that allow everyone to see who is sharing. (limewire, etc)

Use uTorrent for BitTorrent, and careful on the software choices.

Ironically... I've never seen anyone busted for sharing the $5,000-$8,000 software suites (Adobe, Autodesk, etc...). But most people are busted sharing $30-50 computer games. So watch it. It's the games that cause the most trouble.
