Default student loans....

Well, I am now fully registered with Wyo Tech, and I am suspossed to be begining Oct '05.

I know nothing about this student loan thing, fasfa, how grants work, nothing. I am 100% illeterate when it comes to this. im sure there are a few others in the same boat...

this is what I think I understand: (?) means i am confused
fasfa= free money givin to you by the govt. (?)but you must meet certain criteria in order to recieve any $(?)
grants= free money givin to you by the goverment, not in conjunction with fasfa
federal student loan= (?)i have no idea
student loan= money loaned that you borrowed (?)

now this is my other question. can you take out more money than the cost of the school, meaning my school costs $22,000, can I take out like $30K on a loan for school and living expenses? also, say your in school and you need some more money, can you re-finance your loan, or do something like that to get more. I have heard of people just getting more money like that...im just wondering.

also does your credit really matter when taking out a school loan. i dont have the best of credit, but i NEED a loan. I have heard, that credit doesnt really play a role in school loans because you dont start paying for it until you are out of school.

any help would be great!
