Stocks and investing

Hey guys, I started saving a bit and I want to invest some.

I was thinking some stocks but I don't really know what else is out there.

I've got about 1,000 right now and I'm going to keep saving as well.

Any suggestions?

you need to start a roth IRA... it is estimated that 100 a month for 40 years will turn into 1 million bucks... not a guarentee.. but pretty darn close... if you do it for only 30 years you'll yield only 300k, so 10 years you lose 700k... not sure how it works, but i have read about it a few times... it just sucks i have a bad memory.

I started a year or two ago and I have 6k right now and I'm about to drop 3k by the end of the month before taxes. ;)

I'm not too educated on the topic, but i am making some money... which is good.

saving early is VERY important... also you should take ONE hour of your wages per day and put that into savings.

Buy gold! In the last 10 years it's almost tripled in value at some points and is expected to climb almost $100/ounce by September! I'm getting my hands on as much of it as I can and have just started to gather mining equipment. ---- man, playing with turbo cars takes your $, playing with gold mining adds $ lol. I have a little over 3 ounces built up and have only been going at it for a few months.

I'm interested in this topic. I want to put my money somewhere and get some returns on it... Thought about those 5.x% banks interest they're advertising on tv, but of course would rather invest in something more lucrative.

Wow what a good post to come upon while I am studying for my final in Investments today... I don't feel comfortable making any reccomentdations but, I would consider what Murdoc is showing you, if it is what I think it is, it is the vanguard 500, which is closely related to the S&P 500. Basically returns are going to follow what the market does for the most part, and its one of the most diverse portfolio's available (less risk). And it is definetely true about that extra 10 years between investing 30 and 40 years, we did the present value calculation, and that compounding makes a crazy difference, in fact I think we used the Vanguard 500 or S&P when we did the calculations.

I use Ameritrade for stock trading (I'm not really that active right now... too time consuming for me). I also have a HSBC direct for a savings account (paying 6.00% right now on new money, 5.05% on everything else).

My parents are into this currency exchange program called 4X. It's a bit more risky, but if you're good at it you can limit your risk and make some pretty good money. You can trade almost any currency against another (not just the US dollar). Seems like something cool to get into and good at... also it's 24 hours a day trading since it's using worldwide currencies.

index mutual funds have shown over the last 30 years and average increase of 10%. safer than stocks because they buy and trade on the s&p 500 which ------s your money over many different places, therefore if something tanks, it doesn't hurt you considerably

look into swing trading, it's alot of reading and applied common sense, but its good money if you do it right.

If you want to have some physical income from stocks, look for ones with decent dividend percentages. I dropped a lot of money into Diageo, and they have kicked back a 3% dividend rate, which is ------- amazing for a stock. Oh yeah, did I mention they make liquors? What you want to invest in depends on what you want out of it. If you want something that will be ready for you to crack open 40 years from now, Roth IRA is a good idea. If you want to play the stock market, and have long term money from it, start by buying a single share of Berkshire Hathaway, they are an expensive pick per share price, but I haven't lost any money with them. If you want more of a short term investment that will send you a check every now and then (dividend), something like Diageo is a good choice, because a 3% dividend is just amazing. If anyone wants to talk investing, feel free to pm me, it's sort of a hobby....

It may be a hobby, but you need better reasons to invest than "I haven't lost any money yet". You need to know when, why, what and how things are being done, you need to speculate about a situation and invest in a company that will provide the desirable work and or technologies for that application/need. This is why the business section in the news is written like it is and politics are so important in the news. It's a lot of staying on top of a ---- load of information and making something real out of it in your mind.

Don't really have time to go into the how and why, have a game to go to. But when I get back, I'll go over the Berkshire pick in a bit more detail

Some good info going on in this thread,

I currently have a 401K set-up through my work takes 3% on my income before taxes and they match it...not tons of cash right now but it adds up

For my personal money I have an ING and a HSBC account...I try and swap it back and forth between them for whoever has the better deal, like some posted above HSBC is 6% right now on new money...

I haven't personally gotten into the riskier investments but I couldn't afford to loss big on one, so I'll play it safe...
