SS Autochrome what was the reason they sucked?
 

I am an old fart, and I cannot recall why it was that their manifolds were so piss poor. Could someone refresh me? Is it because the colors warp quickly? Or do they crack easily?

Supposedly cause they crack easily, but was told if they are supported properly, they can last.

yeah that's what i heard too. i was thinking about getting one and welding some braces onto it and see how it holds up because they look nice and are a hell of alot cheaper then others that look similar.

What do you mean by supported properly? Like having a bar extended to the downpipe that kinda keeps it from jiggling around?

I am interested in one of their equal flow headers, since I have had NO lucky finding someone else to build one for me and these look like the next best thing.

Some of them aldo had warped flanges that did not seal good, and then you had exhuast leaks that can't be fixed. The latest ones they were selling had the braces already welded on, from the turbo flange to the head flange, just little square bars going from one to the other.

Yea as i know the guy doesnt really stand by his product so it cant be to great, but they do look professionaly made and if u can add a few welds urself u should be fine

Ive been told the welds suck, they crack easily and everything else you probably heard but I know someone whose had a braced one for 6 months and had no problems with it. The guy who makes them now puts braces on them so they dont crack as easy. Im not sure Id put one on my car but do as you please

Yes this has been discussed before, I'm no ------- newbie to these message boards - I gurantee I have been around alot ------- longer then you have. But as we all know the search mode for this forum program, is not that great since it doesn't return the threads it only returns the posts themselves.

Get over it, people are gonna ask the same quesitons over and over and you have a choice to either read and answer, or as you do be a smart ass about it.

Chacko I'm running one on my setup. I just started using it last weekend so It's still in it's "new" stage, but I re welded just about everything and also added bracing to strenthen it up. I've also made a bracket coming from the downpipe flange that bolts to the turbo, and it bolts to the block where the AC pump used to be.
So far so good. No cracks, no leaks, and it seems realy strong so I'm honestly not worried. The color did change real fast though. Like within 5 minutes of the car running the mani turned gold. I'd have to say thats normal for a stainless manifold though (not quite sure I'm used to the ceramic coating).

stainless will always change color with the heat, i had some headers that looked like they were titanium with the color change a while back

Well, I was sponsored by the guy. He told me he would personally oversee the production of mine and give it to me free if i would take pictures for his e-bay ad, and run a sticker. First "braced" one, runner 2 broke completely off of the flange. Sencond "braced" one he gave me, the wastegate pipe cracked almost clean off. Piping was decent, but just make sure you reinforce and re-weld the runners, flanges, and wastegate pipe.

Needless to say, i tossed his ---- and mailed him his sticker back.

Stainless likes to crack, unless it is realy thick. Even factory exhast, which is a realy shitty grade of stainless but less prone to cracking even cracks. Its the nature of the beast. If he made them from mild steel with a suport they would be fine.

---- it, i have had no luck with my past turbo kits/manifolds, i just bought one of ss auto craps mani's and dp's :-X i got it for 160 bucks and it's braced, i didn't buy it from auto crap but from some guy who bought it from them, but never used it. ---- it, if it cracks, i'll weld it, the end. i plan on getting a custom equal length eventually, so this thing just needs to get me through the summer or so. *puts on flame suit* :-\

its not just that they crack, they are total ----. the runners are tiny and the collector looks like crap. i would stay n/a b4 i paid more than 20 bucks for one (to hack off the flanges and use them, thats it)

---- it, if it sucks, i'll send it to jung to get powder coated and sell it for twice as much (with the cracks of coarse) ;D i was in a pinch and needed something quick/cheap and figured i would take the chance, i think a lot more people are using them than care to admit, no shame in my lame game :-*

A friend was pulling up to jumpstart this guy at Schuck's and when he started up his pretty little LS motor, I was like, "---- dude, your wastegate is shaking like ----" and I reached in and gave it a little shake to see how loose it was and it was totally broken off. The whole pipe and flange broke off. SS seems to be quite ghey. On the plus side, the wastegate pipe was so small that even with a huge leak it would spool up and do a Schuck's burnout. Everyone, come to Schuck's, do a burnout. All the way across the parking lot.

Welp I ended up going with a different company that uses cast iron :)
