I did a little research on here a while back about stereos, sealed boxes are the best. search around for some boxex, try to find what air space the manufacturer of your sub recommends and then build a box with that airspace. if you can't find the exact manufacturer specs for air space try to find specs for a sub with the same wattage as yours.

Go to home depot and buy some wood, and some good wood glue and silicone, make sure its air tight.

Is it the right board. Is it MDF, I think that is what it is called.

Re:Speaker box

ported boxes actually are design wise more efficient but they have to designed perfectly for both the speaker and your car to be effective.

Re:Speaker box

make sure you get 3/4 inch MDF wood... its whats used on speaker boxes. my opinion, if its a strong good sub then you should used ported. those hit the best. sealed only sounds good in certain cars but ported sounds good in all cars that i've seen so far. little more thought when making but well worth it. check ebay for a few. its about the same price as making one...

here ya go buddie... can't beat that.

Re:Speaker box

actually, a sealed enclosure is the most efficient over a large range of frequencies...but ported, slot ported, or band-pass enclosures can produce tighter/more powerfull bass at a specific frequency.

if you are going to build your own box, go with a sealed. all you need is the correct air space for the subwoofer that you are using. use this equation:

[(length x width x height) - displacement of sub]/ 1728

all measurements are in inches, and this will give you cubic feet of air space within the box. the displacement of the subwoofer should be given to you on the spec sheet of the sub, or on the manufacturer's website along with the recommended sealed enclosure volume.

hope this helps.

Re:Speaker box

sealed box's shorten's the life of speakers. or so thats what ive been told by re audio. for starters you can check out their designs http://www.reaudio.com/html/. then click on tech then enclosures. then single then look at the dimensions for 12's. i bought my brother a 15" XXX from re audio. and let me tell you that ---- bumps hard. you cant even breath in that mofo. but its in an escalade. ported is the way to go if your going for spl.

my ported 12's in my civic are the ----.
I only run 300rms and 600 pek. and I got the bass at -6 so your ears dont bleed. the box depends on car and speckers to sound good.

I bought a 10" diamond sub in a Orbicon dual chamber bandpass and it sounds like a pair of 12's. Im pushing it with a Alpine mono amp so its all good stuff but That diamond wouldnt sound half as good in a sealed box. I used to be a all sealed box fan but after hearing what this box can do. I was impressed. Its not like true band pass. It doesnt have plexi glass but thats what they call it :-\

Re:Speaker box

All in all, a ported enclosure is usually the best for SPL...a properly tuned and ported box usually can average a 3db gain over standard sealed enclosure, which equals about 2 times louder to the human ear. Sealed enclosure on the other hand, offers a much broader frequency response. What type of music you listen to is pretty much gonna determine what type of enclosure to use. Rock or heavy metal, go with a sealed box. Heavy bass or rap, go ported. As for bandpass, they have to be tuned exactly to get the most out of them, or else they sound like ----. Also think of it this way...a bandpass box will usually be twice as large as a sealed box...not a good idea if you have a small car.
