Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

Ok, I'm looking for a digital camcorder for around $300. I'm not looking for a professional $14,995 setup. I just want something to record ---- and upload it to my computer. I don't need fancy crazy ---- that I can't understand. I just want a simple digital camcorder. I do want to be able to tell what I recorded and not just see fuzzy ----. Is this price reasonable or am I going to have to fork out some more loot? I found some piles of ---- on ebay with off names, but I'm sure they are junk. Also, I can't seem to find a spec that says how long I can record for. I want to be able to record for at least an hour. I know nothing about this and need help. Please help me. I'm a ------- caveman. :'(

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

I'll get right on that as soon as I Google up WTF a stone axe is lol! ;)

I just want a full digital camera. It doesn't have to have a tape. Just as long as I can upload the video to my computer.

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

I thought the tape would be more expensive? ??? I dunno? It doesn't matter to me really. I don't care what it does as long as I can upload it to my computer. :-[

For what its worth, but it at Costco. You can return it anytime for any reason w/o a receipt for as long as you own it. No need to buy an extra warranty. Might not be a big selection, but they have some nice units.
Steady shot is a must, and night vision is great for late night friends puking shots.

Ok, someone tell me this. Which is better, one that records on mini DV tapes or one that records on Hi8 tapes? What is the difference or does that even matter to me since I'm only using it to upload video to my computer? ???

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

Try here... http://www.camcorderinfo.com/

I would recommend the Canon ZR series. I have been doing some research on camcorders myself. The Canon ZR60 is the cheapest and will do what you want. Plan on spending around $400 for everything (maybe less). They aren't as expensive as they used to be. Check out the bottom left hand side of that site because they have forums and user boards with a lot of good info. I have checked out the whole Canon ZR forum and it has some good stuff on it. Good site info for cheap prices as well.

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

What do you think sounds better a tape or a CD???? thats what your looking at basically when you compare the two...

Hi8 is basically like well a tape... just that its a bit better than an average camcorder.... good for shooting video... sound is ok... good technology if you dont have much to spend....

Mini DV... basically like a CD... its digital... meaning resolution is greatly improved, you can take still images... or record digital video... this is best if you are going to be uploading videos to your comp for editing...
drawbacks... well it is a bit more expensive than Hi8... but its worth the price for the quality....

hope that helps... anyways... help a brother out and go to

www.price.com

click on stuff...

go to electronics. then camcorders.. and that will sort things out for you so you can compare and get a good deal on a camcorder...

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

The camera used in these videos was a Canon ZR40. That is the same thing as the Canon ZR60 except an older model. I am assuming you want it to take videos of your car? Well here are some good examples.

20mb... http://khskenny.no-ip.com/turbod16.wmv

5mb... http://khskenny.no-ip.com/d16roll.wmv

OMG that price.com site has some awful feedback. Did you read any of the reviews? I wouldn't buy from any of those companies. Holy ---- I can't believe how horrible there feedback is. Damn. Anyways, that info helped. I think I'm going with the mini DV. Thanks for the help. :)

I'm still downloading those vids.

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

God damn it. I just bought a camcorder and it said it was a digital mini DV, but it is not capable of uploading to my computer. Unless I am a moron(which is very possible)and can't figure out how to work this piece of ----.
It's a Sharp VL-Z1U. I thought as long as it was a mini DV recorder it was able to upload to a computer? ??? WTF? It came with no CD and it says nothing in the instructions about transfering to a computer. God dman it. I suck at this ----. >:(

At least I have 30 days to try it out and take it back. :-\

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

Doc-

If you're running 2k/XP, all you need is a IEEE 1394 cable (firewire) and some video editing software. I saw in another thread that you have a relatively new Dell PC so it should have a firewire port built in. If not, you'll have to get an add on card and have it installed into your computer.

Dr.Boost 12-30-2003 11:04 PM

Re:Someone help me pick out a digital camcorder please!

Really? Damn, thanks alot for that info. I really like this camera, but if it doesn't work with my computer it's useless to me.

What does the firewire thing look like? My computer is a Dell 4550 and it's about a year old now. I had it built with all kinds of upgrades, but I have no ------- clue what they do. :-[ I'm not a computer guy. Please tell me what I need or what it looks like so I can see if I have it and where would I find the software?

Yes, I'm running XP also. Thanks for any help. :)

the firewire plug is like a square, if you have it, you prolly know. you can get this thing called a "dazzle" that allows you to download dv to your computer via firewire or usb from a regular camcorder, i would rather use a firewire than a usb

I'm lazy, so if this has already been mention bite me :P

Normal digit photo cams usually record video now adays as well. Depending on the size of the memory card, up to 5min.

yeah, i just got 128mb memory stick for mine and it records up to about 7 mins, the only thing is, you can't zoom in video mode, no light for dark or dim lighting, etc., you can take basic video with it, but nothing nice at all.

Here is a pic of a firewire plug.

http://www.dynamism.com/a1/firewire.gif

Any decent software is going to cost you a bit unless you can find a warez copy (check Kazaa). I'd recommend Adobe Premier (what I use)

Here is a good primer to get you started: Video Editing

Hope that Helps

God damn it, it looks like I don't have that plug. >:( I can still use a USB plg though? I have several USB plugs. ::)
Thanks for the help.
