Re: somebody talk to me about the old subaru legacy turbos
I actually own a 93 legacy turbo. It's my DD. It's stock, but I did install a wrx topmount intercooler, a mbc, a msd dis 2 ignition, a modded 1g bov, and a homemade fuel cut defender. The stock computer fuel cuts at 13.7 psi. I'm running 16 lbs of boost, but its an automatic and i believe that any higher boost with these turbos would excede their efficiency limits. They are very small. These blocks are very good because of their closed deck design and their factory forged cranks and rods, but the pistons are cast, hence the low compression. The drawback to these motors are the heads. I believe that they are only good for a little over 300 hp. Most people do swap the heads for newer NA heads. It does leak oil out the valve cover, the cam seals and the crank seal. Maybe one day I'll fix it. The transmission shifts nice and firm, surprising for a factory automatic. My last run was a 14.9 but that was a while ago. Being my everyday car, I just put gas in it and go.

I've been driving a Legacy L for a couple of weeks. When my mom was driving it, the only problem she had was the CV joints, they seemed start clicking all the time. The passenger side is going out right now. other than that the subie is a beast. NO other problem with 160k on it.

i say go with a 95-99 LEgacy wagon. Im not sure if they were available with factory turbos but i know they have the 5 speeds in that year and im sure you could swap over some turbo parts from a JDM ej. Hope that helps. I kinda want one too as a DD. Seen one not to long ago in a black paint scheme with The STI gold wheels. it looked nice.
Ill find a pic and post
