Soldering sucks

So, I got one of these PS2 modchip deals. Friends always call me to solder their ---- b/c I always do such a nice job, so I figured installing a couple chips on a Playstation would be cake. Nothing could be further from the truth. Long story short, I finally got it installed after about 4hrs of work. Had to redo most of the solders. Anywho, heres some pics. (this is the slim PS2 btw)

LOL, PS2 pwnt. How would someone reverse engineer a playstation like that for all those wires, espicially for almost zero gain. A source code or design plan must have leaked out.

Very nice soldering, what sort of tool did you use for things that precise, what sort of desoldering tool did you use aswell, the suction type or the braid? :)

Thanks. For desoldering I just used some old wire to soak up a bit at a time. I've got a suction type, but it doesnt have precise enough of a tip. For the soldering, I got a 15w iron from Radio Sack and filed it down to a razor point tip. I used that soldering flux paste and it makes a huge difference. Basically doesnt work at all without it.

So far I've tested the following
Rumble Wresting - half naked chicks wrestling. I bet its cool when their boobs touch.

Initial D - for the JDM fanboy in all of us.

About to test out Kaido Battle which is like a semi-ricey Japanese racing/drifting game.

P.S. the above post is a joke, I would never download games off the internet, because its illegal. ::)

It isn't easy, but it is worth it. I have done a few PS2's and X-boxes and bell boxes. It is all worth it though. I would never do that crap for anyone else without a little compensation.

Old wire, never though of using that, thats a good tip :D

Re:Soldering sucks

Very nice, two of my friends have burned at least 3 ps2s by trying to mod them; whenever they would screw up on one they'd go to Walmart and buy another... then return the broken one in the packaging. ;D After their experience, I was pretty happy when they just got me the swap magic disks and a slide card. Works perfect for me, and no modding. :P I think the 17 wire ps2 mod chips are about the most complicated i've seen.

Re:Soldering sucks

Speaking of easier methods, i hear they are coming out with a solderless version of that chip I just installed (DMS4 Lite). Talk about bad timing. Oh well. Does the slide card let you play import games and all that stuff? I just realized I don't know how to read Japanese. Oh well.

Re:Soldering sucks

Haven't tried to play any imports. Just US backups. On a game or two, you need an extra disk (cdloader, you can download it for free on the internet)... Trying to remember which game, I think it was Rachet and Clank 2... anyhow, there isn't a game I haven't been able to run so far.

lets hope you didn't inhale any of those fumes from the hot solder.

They are carcinogenic :-\

maybe it's just the pics but that looks like some thick ass wire! I use tiny wire 4 doing my xboxes and shite, find it way easier to work with. 8) all those wires remind me of when I did my first homebrew chip ;D

Re:Soldering sucks

it might be the pics. Thats the smallest wire i've ever worked with or seen.

hey slo 13, think you could take a look at my safc2 that doesnt wanna power it up? im good at soldering buty not to that extent. it would have taken me twice the time and i would have cursed way too much. plus the smoke would have made me high and i would have lost interest.

As long as you wont hold me accountable for ------- it up even worse, sure no problem. I might be in the ATL area on Saturday. Planning on going to the 2 pullaparts to get some civic and 240sx parts.
