I don't fit the bill for AS, but some of my behaviors are similar. AS is defined as normal IQ with one specfic obsession + area of expertise, manifesting in childhood. I have mutant IQ, was extremely well read but had no direction as a child, and have three discernible areas of expertise with average interest in other pursuits. My label was "sequencing as a long term memory function," primarily organizational ability on the cognitive level. This is tested for + diagnosed in a similar manner to AS, ie the Wechsler IQ test and then other specifics. Like someone with AS, I did very poorly on the Wechsler picture arrangement subtest (6, dog; there are high functioning downs syndrome kids, and NBA players, who do better). Picture arrangement is indicative of my ability to organize things... as well as my grasp of non-verbal social situations, which is the only similarity to AS. Sequential dysfunctions have been labelled by some doctors as an alternate learning style and not a syndrome, problem, condition, etc. The root of it is that my neurons fire in a different manner than other's.

Now, compound that with ADHD.

I was four times as bright in my early twenties. I was generally higher-functioning, and had occasional moments of perfect clarity and mental tenaciousness where it was scary for other people to be around me. It was scary to be me. Did I feel like I had an edge over other people? That's like saying I had an edge over a beagle in a game of chess.

My attention span has been a degenerative condition. I went from being a master of verbal nuance, able to communicate great subtleties by precise choice of word + inflection to the few around me who could understand me... to feeling like I had so many words I was tripping over them. The last four years has been hellish. Edge? I couldn't function. ----, I've been meaning to go to a doctor for two years, when I realized how problematic my life had become, and kept forgetting to. Can't pay bills on time. Forget responsibilities. Unable to finish anything I start. Etc.

I cleaned my car yesterday, I dropped off half the ---- other people have left in my basement and wouldn't pick up off at their workplaces (heh), did laundry, went to the bank, purchased cleaning supplies at Wal-mart without getting lost/taking forever/forgetting to buy something, watched an hour and a half of the Lain eps I downloaded, had dinner with my mom, assembled the roomate's "liquorcycle," and a bunch of small ----. Without rushing around or feeling rushed. On a normal day - pick one. Maybe two. Let's not forget going out and meeting chicas... nice to crash a strange social group of predominantly women and fielding a half dozen hugs when I walk out the door three hours later.
