So I wanna do my own headliner

So I wanna do my own headliner
I got a write up on it off vortex which seems ok but the main reason i was looking for one was to figure out what to use product wise. anyone put in their own headliner or do upholstery? I was told 3m adheasive is good but when i called around none of my apholstery shops used or recomended it. also couldnt find cheap foam, I found headliner with foam attached ready to go for like 12-14 a yard but i found cool fabric for like a buck a yard and was thinking plain old foam would be much cheaper but cant find anyone selling it.

3m spray is the best you are going to find for the everyday consumer. When I worked @ an upholstery shop we actually use a air gun similar to a paint gun and fill it up with a glue that I couldn't even tell you where to find it if I wanted to. Foam + fabric is the way to go, its much much easier to do. Just clean the old glue off the headliner with a wire brush. Spray about 6 inches, let it get tacky, lay the foam down from front to back in 6 inch increments at a time. repeat process. Cut slits for the overhead lamp, and slit the corners so they fold over easily and glue the corners on the backside.

joanne fabrics ftmfw
3m ftmfw too
joanne's will have the fabric, the foam, and the 3m ----.
DONT use the fake leather. its to heavy and in the hot sun the adhesive cant hold it.
what link on vortex did you use? i need to take the headliner down to replace the sunroof in my mk4 jetta and cant find a good how to on there. their search feature sucks worse than HMT's

But its a write up on the MKIII B4 passat. Like 95-97 i think or something so im not sure how different it would be for your jetta.

Re: So I wanna do my own headliner
jesus. i did this last summer. i used a gnarly adhesive from 3M.
i would say this
or this
and a hot glue gun on the edges.
make sure that your material stretches well and it's plenty wide. a lot of the standard widths aren't wide enough. sunroofs are a real bitch too. avoid plaid and other ---- like that, because 99% of the time it is gay and all the stretching needed really ***** up the look.
my suede didn't stretch, so i never finished the passenger c pillar and the front has mad wrinkles.

IMO that Super 77 stuff is junk for headliners.
i used that on some felt that i put on as a head liner and it never held up. the first hot day of summer and the headliner was sagging.
use the high strength stuff, that is MUCH better.
