snapping axles

I snapped my axles yesterday while racing on the autobahn, I was shocked, because I did not expect it to happen at wide open throttle and high speed, I thought axles normally break during burnouts, and bad launches.
I was at 260kph doging the ---- out of this aud1 a6 when my steering wheel snagged to the right, so I pulled over and the car wouldn't drive , so I put the car 1st while its running. and looked under the car, the were spinning but the car was not moving, snapped off in the hubs. I guess I need to get DSS .
has anyone else experience anything like this?

Wow, that could have been ugly at that speed. You must be makin some good power and stressed them over time. What tires are you running?

toyo proxis 215/40/ZR16 . they do not have a lot of meet on them.
maybe its just stress overtime, I had them since last year, I raced on them using drag radials, I have a set of integra ls ones, that uses a diferent type intermediate shaft which I also have, I gonna try those later.
it was scary as hell fighting that car back to the left. I am lucky to have ADAC europe's version of AAA, I have the plus which is great, because no matter where you break they will to it back to your house, and if needed the will provide a rental. for only a anual fee of $85. I was lucky I went back home to get my phone or else I would be on the side of the road frozen.

I dont see why they both would break at those speeds, nothing locked up or anything?

Re: snapping axles

they are some shitty gator rebuilds, they where beaten on a lot, last year burnouts , 6000k launches and all, the started, it seems like the one that stripped was extended too much, so the clip failed, thats what it looked like to me, and the other one snapped when I started loosing the car, and lsd try compensate, I am trying to make my own conclusion, either way they were used and abused. and liked like painted stock axles with gator sticker on them. I rebuilt them already with stock parts. so I guess they are indeed stock painted.

somtimes over time the metal fatigues and they just snap, but thats only the case for the outer cv's usually, if your breaking the actual shaft and not the joint then your just overpowering them

the shafts are not broken, the joints that goes into the hubs are.
I am thinking of getting some dss level 2.9 can't afford anything higher. I would love to get some autozone lifetime warranty, but I am out of warranty zone I think. gonna try though.

Too bad the trans breaks before you can truly stress the axles to the point of failure.

:P

Re: snapping axles

it was very scary, but I kept control and did not panic , good thing I had 4 lanes to swerve in. I stoped 25m in front of a 300m tunnel.

Re: snapping axles

you should buy new axles from someplace that offers a lifetime warranty like autozone. I love bringing broken ---- back to them

Re: snapping axles

How would racerstev heat treating work on axles? It does wonders on stock trans internals.
