Smokey Smoke Smoke...(HELP)--->Update

So I'm cruisng to school and I glance back to see me covering cars in blue smoke. Yea, out of NO where. I'm thinking blown turbo seals because the car still seems to be running normal. Anyway, this happens intermittenly and I would figure that it would be constant and it holds no particular pattern, but when it smokes it can make the tailgating truck behind me drop back 12 cars. This started yesterday morning out of no where and today when I got to school I checked the oil and the stick is dry, but it's not ticking or tapping. I'm leaving it at school then driving it home tomorrow. This is my DD and I NEED it back on the road. Any idea of what the problem could be for sure? I'm thinking turbo seals, but the intermitteness is strange. Is there anyway I can get my car drivable while the turbo is getting rebuilt?

Yea, take your turbo ---- off and throw on a stock header.

Ditch PVC valve and vent to atmosphere.

Double check that the smoke screen doesn't occur on engine decel in gear (high vacuum).

If your car smokes that just means its running good. Both my hondas run good. :)

Oil lines. Run the feed into the dump? Block the feed off with a bolt? I thought about it but this is my only real issue.

Also, I don't THINK this is it, but I am now running a closed catch can with no ventation just a welded up can. Don't think that could have caused this?

I checked on throttle and on deceleration. There is no pattern which is what is confusing to me. It does it when it wants. Start smoking really light and quit, decel and it will puff then idle and it's puffing drive and it stops and just crusing and starts going again. ???

Ha, thanks Pat, but did you ever check your oil to see nothing on it and it STILL run 12.6s?

I just changed my oil actually, it only had about 250 miles on it since last time, but it was sitting for over 6 months, so I figured it was about time haha. I don't have my slicks anymore, so I won't be running that fast. I bet with a good launch at the boost at 12-14psi I could get 12.9 with my drag radials though.

:X I'll dump to the atmosphere. Too late I guess now. Still wondering how blown seals can lose THAT much oil.

Venting to atmosphere will correct all problems, unless you shoved out a crank seal or something due to crankcase pressure.

Then why (a week and a half ago) when I first did it it didn't start right away?

I prefer 'relapse'. :-* I'm still a n00b in my mind. Hence my issue, haha.

Heh, you're still a noob in my book kid 8)

Why run a catch can when you can run a hose to the ground... Unless you like analyzing your caught oil.

So I could have fresh air vents and not smell oil. I thought it would be okay because I have seen other catchcans run with no ventalation straight to a closed container. I felt inside the inlet of the turbo and I felt oil, ha. Can you lose that much oil from turbo seals?

I always thought you were supposed to keep the PCV hooked up. So basically what JD is saying is that you should take the PCV valve out and vent both the valve cover and the one on the back of the block to the atmosphere?

Why did my CRX start smoking from a clogged PCV vent after seven months turbocharged? I remember the hose venting from the valvecover being free from obstruction, but for some reason she turned into old smokey one morning and sure enough the hose was clogged. I dunno, you answer mine and I'll answer yours?

---- PCV, you can not get enough crankcase ventilation. Mister EPA might disagree with me, but Mister EPA has never built any fast cars.

if u do need to get the turbo rebuilt,...talk to a few of the rebuilder companies and see if u can have them send u a turbo and send urs back as a core...might be a little more expensive but if downtime is that important to you, might wanna give iit a shot

worn out turbine piston ring and bearings? Yep, time for a preventiive rebuild!

Replacing the turbo up front is great to avoid downtime and you should be able to find some rare turbo shops that do not charge any extra to do it. :6

You were right. Put oil in it last night and drove it and it smoked a little. Drove it home today and no oil used and not a single trail of smoke. I think it built up mad pressure and started pushing out of the compressor and the exhaust and then it just was the exhaust burning off all of the excess oil. It runs perfect, boosts fine, Vaccums REALLY well (actually a few marks higher around 22mmHg now), and doesn't smoke at all. So it seems as though it was just a PVC issue and thanks to you all I was able to vent to the atmosphere and save my turbo. :) Still lucky I pushed all that oil out of the turbo and never blew the seals. God blesses me. :y

I got your PM Blaast and I was just going to send you my stuff and not do the turbo swap and then refund as we discussed before. To be honest I'm going to look it over really hard this weekend and hopefully it's not needing that rebuild quite yet. Thanks for all your service, but for now, it is all okay and on hold.
