Smart phones

i'm looking for a new phone and thought it would be nice to surf the internet while i drive ^-^ so i want to try one of those fancy "smart phones"
so after a little research I came to a list of the phones that might work.

all those phones have 3g service which i need. i know the Treo has a stylist(pen thing) which makes it easier to navigate.
the moto Q has GPS and i think the BJ 2 dose as well which would be nice as i get lost going to work. Don't really care about the camera. no need for opening Word/Excel files or viewing PowerPoint & PDF docs . what i need for it to do is be a regular phone that surfs the web with ease, send emails, YIM, post 1 pic of my AMG at the dyno, GPS so if someone kidnaps me and throws me in the middle of nowhere and forgets to take my phone i can find the nearest waffle house. maybe watch youporn vids and what not..

cliff note: i need some advice and/or opinions on any of these phones

what carrier? I have the ppc6800 through alltel. After downloading the hacks to enable gps radio the thing rocks. I had to buy a navigation program and use third party work arounds but all said and done it is worth it, but you can get free programs like google maps too. If you want to pay 10 bucks a month though the blackberry pearl has built in gps but you have to pay for the telenav usage. if you are interested in the pearl though you better hurry. they discontinued it.

new palm treo 690 (centro). i have had it about 3 weeks and i love it. but truth be told verizon is the only true 3gnetwork. the best have gotten out of mine is 136kbps. average is 50-60kbps. (sprint) but sprint has a deal now where its only 69.99 with 2 yr activation.

Re: Smart phones

ppc6800 from alltel is also the tytn II. HTC ------- rocks. Bought the Pantech Duo for the wife. Not a bad phone as far as features. Lacking touch screen though so when I try to navigate through windows mobile i get a little confused because i am used to being able to touch the screen. Mini SD slot, bluetooth, windows mobile.....what more do you need? All palm OS suck dick anyway.

VERY good phone :)

I rocked the SDA when it first came out, then upgraded to the MDA when it came out a couple weeks later. Loved the MDA but it was buggy and not as well built as the Wing.

Wing has better keyboard, microsd, better software (less buggy, more features), better camera, and spring loaded keyboard that doesn't wear out like the mda's slide. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't have more system memory and still uses the same 195mhz processor as in the MDA.

HTC definitely (in my opinion) builds the best smartphones. Motorola, no. Samsung, not too bad. Try to get an HTC though.

Re: Smart phones

battery life will own you with these smart phones.

I have had the Wing and Dash from Tmobile. Neither of them would last a full day on a full charge.

If you plan on using the "smart phone" for moderate usage of programs and internet surfing and such, I suggest at least another battery with a stand alone charger for that battery along with a wall charger for home, a wall charger for work, and car charger.

Uh I'd really have to disagree. My MDA and Wing both last over a day with moderate use, 2 or more days with "normal" use, and even if I use it heavily (on the internet the entire time) it'll still last 5+ hours.

Here's a few reviews to back it up:
http://www.mobiletechreview.com/phon...obile-Wing.htm
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,13...1/article.html
http://www.wirelessinfo.com/content/...ttery-Life.htm

They all say excellent, I've seen talktime tests going almost 8 hours...sooooooooooo...either you have wifi sitting on all the time, or are on a 3g network for hours, have crappy software, or a crappy battery.

Also, like those reviews said, they last 7-8 hours of straight talk-time. Your definition of "moderate" is obviously different from mine. When I used to work a boring ass job, I could be online 4-6 hours during the day, send hundreds of texts, a few calls, and still have a charge when I went to bed. I'll just put it this way: I use my phone more than the average person, and haven't had my MDA or Wing die on me in 3-4 years (whenever the MDA came out).

Smartphones use more power, but they usually have larger batteries to compensate. Obviously if you're sitting on a UMTS/HSPDA network, with bluetooth/wifi enabled, while sending messages...the battery isn't going to last a full day. Fortunately (kinda), T-Mobile still uses the weakass EDGE network which is power sipping, and why would you sit on a phone for more than 6-8 hours straight with everything enabled?

Just read reviews of whatever phone you plan on getting before making your decision.

got a PPC and I couldnt hate a phone more. its unstable as ---- and it sucks ass at recovering after software installs. Even when you manually go in and flush the reg it has index files or somthing cause you will still see traces. I coverted mine to Iphone and it was never the same again till i got a new one. I get a new phone ever 2 months cause they all quit doing something or workgin all together. not a very durable phone at all, its better suited for someone who will keep it in a holster, never drop it, never abuse it, never install ---- and trys not to do anythign crazy with it.

Wait till its starts throwing a @ inbetween every letter in your text. or when you get the Cannot use phone there is no wireless radio message. Also the fact that tha phone never truely closes programs or the fact taht all teh programs have a mem leak issue it a bit of a bitch too. keep the stylus handy cause daily reboots will be the norm after workign the phone for a good few weeks.

Sorry for the rant. on my way for phone No.7 now, been through 4 PPC-6700 adn this will be the 3rd new 6800.

ahahahahhah I don't know what your problem is with phones. I've used PPCs for about 4 years and have never had that much trouble. I had my MDA replaced, because it was beat up so I said it wasn't working right (but really worked fine). I had a Wing replaced, because I cracked the screen while I was working on the car with it in my pocket.

Other than that never had a problem, even with tons of dropping and driving with it sliding off the roof of the car.

Re: Smart phones

i like the blackjack because it comes with a bigger battery and a stand alone charger for it. It also has quick toggles to turn off bluetooth and g3 networks. And it gets dropped about once a week and hasnt messed up yet. the only gripe with it is it saves every text for months. thousands. i have had it 8 months and just found the sent messages box still full. took 6 hours to erase, and the phone was completely useless during that.

I KNOW RIGHT! after the iphone mishap i left them alone thinking "If i don't ------- break it it will last longer" ---- no. 2 months tops. Does sprint carry anyting else non gay with a touch screen? at this point i could give a ---- less about Office on it i just need that Touch screen.

Re: Smart phones

i say buy an iphone
i heard that apple will be unlocking the gen 2 iphone witch is kewl because i have alltel and want one but i refuze to spend more than $100 on a cell phone and no more than $200 on an mp3 player (and since it has both) i won't spend more than $300 tops for one (with the 16gb hdd, of $200 for the 8gb, or $350 for the 32gb that is supposedly coming out)
but anyway alltel has a kewl smart phone that is like an iphone but no mp3 player and is only $200 and has room for an up to 8gb micro sd card (comes with 256mb) and it's all touch screen and if you want to text or whatever it slides to have a full keyboard

here is one on the alltel website for $150 and is pretty sweet
http://www.alltel.com/wps/portal/AlltelPublic/c1/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3hnP2-DoCBDAwN_HxcnAyNLZ0PLIE9DIN9MPxykA0mFu3eokYFRgFOwW Zi7i5GBgQFE3gAHcDTQ9_PIz03Vj9SPMsdpj7uJfmROanpicqV-QXZ2mnO6oiIAUfiTyw!!/dl2/d1/L0lJSklna21BL0lKakFBTXlBQkVSQ0pBISEvWUZOQTFOSTUwLT VGd0EhIS83X0NOSzBSUjEwME9MREIwMjlDMTlSSTExMEc0L1Bf X19fNQ!!/?WCM_PORTLET=PC_7_CNK0RR100OLDB029C19RI110G4_WCM&W CM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/wps/wcm/connect/Personal/home/p/phonesandaccessories/phones/htc+touch/htc+touch/
this is the one i was talking about but the other is $100 cheaper and is way cooler

Re: Smart phones

my bad jorsher, i did miss the part where you said moderate.

so yes, i would then say that our deffinitions of moderate are different.

in my case, i would have the bluetooth on, emailing, text, be online, calling, and using the apps throughout the day at my job 10-12hrs per day, then come home and continue to use most of features. however, it was not constantly using everything at the same time.

so i would guess i would say that i used it more than moderately by your terms.

i would be working from 6am and by 6pm, i would have only 1 bar left for power, it would be dead by 10pm if i did not charge it. (the Wing). the Dash wouldnt even last to 6pm before needing a charge or it would die.

So what do you consider heavy use? lol

For the average person the Wing will have plenty of battery life and I'm pretty satisfied with its battery life. It's a lot better than I expected from a PPC.

I recommend reading 3rd party reviews of battery life instead of going based on what the manufacturer rates it at. All manufacturers have slightly different ways of finding it, it's not a very accurate.

Right now I've got 2 blackberry pearls, a wing, and dash, in perfect condition, but screen is either broke or displays white.

I have installed a fair amount of programs on my phone, Includeing IFONZ for a short period. Never had a problem. There are rom updates to fix battery life and enable gps radio. These programs never let me down and niether has the phone. PPC geek 4 life. Of course it is always a good idea to have the original rom for your phone in case you need to take it back for repairs. Updating your rom is not covered.

I have a Samsung A900 and it does fine for what I need. The battery doesn't last for ---- and if you roam you might as well just turn it off until you need to make a phone call because it will be dead in an hour or so. :3 Just got my GF the LG "Rumor". I haven't fucked with it much, but IMO it sucks. :-\

I don't know how you guys lose your phones so much. My phone is like a part of my body that I can't go anywhere without. It's strange because I HATE talking on the phone more than anything in the world, but for some reason always manage to have my phone on me. :l
