short shifters? how about B&M?

Just wondering how many of you guys use short shifters, and if anyone here has a B&M shifter on their CRX/Civic. I am putting one on my car this weekend, I am wondering what to expect -- or any installation advice you might give me (AKA, how to avoid screwing up my shift linkage or tranny)

I installed a B&M short shifter in my civic and my friends civic. They are really easy to put in and you won't screw anything up. Just follow the directions and you will be fine.

I have broken 2 'short shifters' that were bought on Ebay. They are only about hlaf an inch shorter than stock. Buy a B&M or do what I did, get a junk stock shifter, hack a couple of inches off, sand the edges down, and slap on a shift knob. Work great ANDs cheap and long lasting.

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

I got a cheap one off ebay and ordered some bushings from options auto(paid more for shipping than the bushings)
the only problem i had was that the end of my shift linkage (89 crx si, btw) was hitting on my stock exhaust when in 5th gear so i had to sawzal a little off ;D
it didn't lower the shift knob height much but the throw is much better, probably due to the non-worn-out bushings

I have to admit, I bougth an APC short shifter :o :o. Yes, I'm sorry :-[. But it was only $20. Not $50 from PepBoys. I actually works good, you can feel a big difference while shifting. I have never tried one of those more expensive ones, but I think they just do the exactly the same, so Just get the cheap one from ebay. You'll like it.

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

so.. just hack of the bottom to shorten the throw?

sohcrxsi 10-22-2003 12:39 PM

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

well, i was grabing second gear, and it was apc

bikerchris13 10-22-2003 12:40 PM

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

to shorten the throw, the bottom of the shifter needs to be extended, below the pivot point
the top portion can be shortened but is not necessary

greddycrx 10-22-2003 12:51 PM

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

i heard you can just cut off an inch or so off the stock shifter and just screw the stock knob back on....and there you have it, a HomeMadeShortShifter!!

turboboy 10-22-2003 01:12 PM

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

thats isnt actually shortening the throw much...gotta lengthen the bottom too

davcivic 10-22-2003 01:33 PM

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

Yeah, it really doesn't matter how long it is inside the car really, but to get a shorter shifts the part under the car after the "ball" needs to be longer.

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

i have a short shifter in my eclipse, its the same length as stock but the throw is like a quarter of the size, its also very notchy.

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

damn, all this talk makes me want to go get one. the throw is short as hell already in my 00 si, i couldn't imagine it being even shorter......

Re:short shifters? how about B&M?

my friend has a DC and a ractive ss, he showed me them both while they were out, they are identical. i bought a ractive ss. works great. i also helped a friend install a solo short shifter, it was also identical to the dc/ractive ss', go figure.

note, while installing dc/ractive/solo short shifters, if you don't drop those little brass bushings atleast 5 times before you get it set right, you're not trying hard enough.
