Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
Just curious of who actually STILL rocks the stock shifter. I still do and I'm thinking about buying the eGay special and was curious of what all of you run. If an aftermarket shifter what make and style (Dual Bend, Road Race, etc.).
I saw in FS a guy made a Road Race shifter and I had some time after traction bar fab work to make one. I'll get pics up later, but the only thing is I rock the stock shifter still and the pull is a little long due to the extra length. :-\ Also, I like the stock looking shifter knob but the plastic threads inside aren't the same as the 3/8 all-thread rod and won't tighten down all the way. Any suggestions? P.S. Thank you for your opinions and suggestions contributed to my post/poll! ;) ;D JP |
Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
IMO stock shifter works just fine unless ur doing mad tye road racing :S
if ur getting ebay shifters make sure your getting a stainless steel one not the shitty alum ones. |
Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
Short shifters ruin Honda trannies.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
i thought i wanted one, put one in and now i plan on swapping back to stock. takes more leverage to get into gear, and almost defeats the need for the quicker throw of the short shifter, you have to actually slam it into gear, or you find yourself taking longer to shift. i dont recommend any short shifter for a honda.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
my short shifter is like a b&m one and it is sometimes hard to get it to first if you downshifting. and jingles alittle bit in 2nd as its rubing against my 3" exhaust. but from what i have heard one of the better short shifters is the skunk2 short shifter.

I like mine. I put them in all my cars.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
I've seen people talking about how you have to double-clutch to keep from breaking stuff with a short shifter. Seems to defeat the purpose, because you can't tell me that you can double clutch and still shift faster than with a stock shifter.
Anyway to answer the question, I'm using a stock shifter, but I have an aftermarket knob which sits lower to start with, and cut some of the threads off so its shorter. I did this mostly to not obstruct the LCD screen I installed in the staock radio/ashtray area. |
Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
I had the B&M edge shifter in my integra and loved it. In my last civic I overhauled the shifter by replacing the rubber washers, removing all the rust and re-greasing everything and that makes a big difference too. I'd say its up to you but don't get one of those cheap ones, there prone to breaking.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
I have a Fidanza dual bend short throw shifter from ebay it was like $30 shipped. I love it...it has incredibly short shifts, but still stock height. No problems so far.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
I'm rocking a del sol shifter in my rex...its like a stock honda short shifter, well it sits lower to the floor but th throw is about the same...I've heard of cutting a section out of the top of the shifter and welding it below the pivot ball, may be hard to fabricate but that would be the ideal short shifter for a honda I'd image

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
i have a cheap 17 dollar ebay cut down a little bit and put in backwards.. (on purpose like the way it sits) ive had it in my last three hondas over the past 3 or 4 years i like it

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
I do not have problems with my b&m i used my stock knob
|
Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
i <3 the stock shifter.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
i had a B&M and just replaced it for the stock shifter. The stock one is alot easier to get into gears and i don't grind gears with the stock one.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
Short shifter. There's nothing wrong with them if (1) it's a quality piece (2) installed correctly. The problem with grinding gears, vibration and difficulty getting into gear is caused from the loss in weight. Get a weighted shift knob, problem solved.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
I like my egay short shifter, it feels normal to me now.
What I find more important however, is replacing the shitty 10-15 year old rubber shift bushings with urathane bits. Seriously, the Energy kit is like, 10 bucks from any speed shop and it's the best 10 bucks I've ever spent. |

This is what I came up with after I saw this from a guy in the FS forum.

Seem to actually get a better shift too. Who knows, I like it. :) JP |
Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...

i have a cheap ebay short shifter i bought 3 years ago for like 10 bucks and it works fine.

Re: Short Shifter or Stock Shifter Preference...
The throw isn't all that bad really and what people have been saying about the short throws being bad makes me a little nervous. It really is very comfortable to shift and when ripping it's not awkward (suprisingly). I can try to get video of shifting if anyone wants to see the travel of it.
