shake shake shake

alright I just notice that when i am driving that when i accelerate or brake slowly at about 20 miles an hour my car shakes back and forth and then at about 65 to 70 the steering wheel shakes like a japanese kid watching cartoons. i am guessing that it is probaly axles what do you guys think

Re:shake shake shake

like if you are moving 60 plus and let go of the wheel it shakes left and right back and forth all the time?

I think that's bad tie rod ends.

Re:shake shake shake

no i think i explained it wrong at 20 it kind of feels like the whole car is rocking back and forth at 65 to 70 the steering wheel just shakes whether im accelerating or braking after 70 its fine

Re:shake shake shake

I believe you have a bad flux capicator. Check it out. Should be in between the front seats. ;D Ah shucks. Just joking. I had that problem once, and I took it to a friend, and he said he passanger side axle was about to fall apart.

Re:shake shake shake

Sounds like a bad tire to me. If you hit a curb you probably broke a cord in the tire and you didn't even know it. Look for a lump or a bulge in the tread or on the side wall.

Re:shake shake shake

the tire and rim were replaced because the tire was flat and the rim was bent that would not cause the car to lunge back and forth at 20 mph and i probaly wouldnt feel it because if had a defected tire with a bubble in it before and it wasnt notice able thanks for the input though im thinking its my axles What do you guys think

Re:shake shake shake

did u get an alignment done?

projekteg 08-06-2003 10:40 AM

Re:shake shake shake

dude, i had the same problem a couple months ago, it feels like the whole car is rocking side to side and the faster you go the faster it gets, do you notice your shifter shaking too? any ways i replace a rim and tire, a spindle, and the driver side axle before i realized it was my intermediate shaft :P

you just have to take your driver side axle off, the there are three bolts that hold the bracket for the intermediate shaft, after you get those off, you just pull it out of the tranny, my frien let me do it at his shop, so i had access to a lift, i may be a pain in the ass on jackstands :P

Re:shake shake shake

i have a brand new tranny in my garage that ive been meaning to put in for a while but i still am not sure it thats it because the steering wheel only shakes from 65 to 70 before and after that it is fine that is why i think it is the axles like it is speed wobble or something and at 20 to about 25 mph it rocks back and forth whether im slowing down or speeding up its like sitting in a rocking chair

Re:shake shake shake

yah to mention, did u check hubs/spindles as well.. could have made a hub an oval shape and that would cause a bump one way and then the other way at the normal sidee of the hub.

imadouche 08-06-2003 10:56 AM

Re:shake shake shake

ill check it out if you havent noticed though im praying that it is axles cause when i put the new tranny in im probably getting new ones but that wont be for another month and a half

Re:shake shake shake

This could be potentially one of three things as far as I see it.

1) Bad wheel/tire on either side (from runout)
2) Bad axles
3) Car is falling out of alignment

Get your car lifted and look at the rod in between your two axles by the side of the transmission (this is your inter. shaft) see if its leaking grease or has any torn boot damage. It may be an internal problem (not visible).

Try starting the car with it secured on jackstands, get a friend that you can trust to turn the wheels side to side (and accelerate lightly on the gas). While the wheels are turning pay attention to strange clicking sounds or sounds of compression in the shaft. If it doesn't sound 'normal' then replace it. Do not do this for an extended period of time you can cause damage to your suspension components.

I'd have your cars alignment checked out again as well; it may be falling out of alignment quickly do to a bad suspension part or perhaps a suspension part that is not secured to factory specifications.

Lastly you can check your 'wheel' out for damage by having someone pry off the tire (at a shop) and inspecting it for any warping. It may be easiest to have them put it on the machine that is used for balancing tires and see if you can visually notice any 'bouncing' in the wheel. This will very easily cause your whole car to shake.

Good luck.

Re:shake shake shake

dude just get some cheap remanufactured axles from advanced auto parts, they're like 50 bucks each and they have a lifetime warranty, whenever one of mine starts to go, i just take it out and take it up there and get a new one for free. been doing this for about a year now.

Re:shake shake shake

Besides the curb you just hit, has your car ever been in a accident?

Re:shake shake shake

I know you said you don't think its the tires but check them again. I had the same problem and the first shop told me it was my axles. Not trusting them I took it to another place and they showed me that a belt busted longways around the tire, not across it. No one noticed it b/c it was something people don't look for and it was towards the inside of the tire you couldnt really see it. Consequently they told me it was a defective tire and I got a new one for free. I know that has nothing to do with your problem but it was one of the few times that corporate america DIDNT stick it in my ass.

Re:shake shake shake

Just make them show you the tire, you can exmaine it yourself. Remember that shops see alot of customers and they do make mistakes daily.

Re:shake shake shake

I dunno but in my old car when I would brake slowly it would do the same thing. I just had warped rotors... That could be the problem? ???

Re:shake shake shake

does so while accelerating too :)

imadouche 08-07-2003 09:44 AM

Re:shake shake shake

yeah it does it under acceleration to but anyways thanks alot guys your a big help

projekteg 08-07-2003 11:35 AM

Re:shake shake shake

it is either:

tire/rim (switch tires around to see if shake moves to the back)

axle

spindle

intermediate shaft

plain and simple, it couldn't be much else
