Jeffrey Cappo, 49, learned the art of selling while working as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman. Later, as a salesman for several Michigan dealers he applied his art quite successfully and continues doing so today as president of Victory Automotive Group, a 17-dealership, 14-franchise operation headquartered in Morristown, TN. We spoke to him recently to learn more about his passion for selling and how he's growing his ever-expanding dealership group.
Jeffrey, how did you get started in the retail car business?
My father was a dealership manager, and I always said to him, “I know I could sell cars.” I started selling cars in 1983 at Ann Arbor Toyota in Ann Arbor, MI, where I worked for perhaps six months, and then I went to work as a salesman for a Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Flint. I was there three years. After that, I worked for two of the best dealers in the country: Al Serra Chevrolet in Grand Blanc, and for the last six years before I became a dealer at Varsity Ford in Ann Arbor.
