Default Setting up a home network. Having trouble...

Ok ive got an old Desktop running Win XP Pro (comp #1)

I just bought a new desktop running Win XP Home (Comp#2)

They both have netwrork cards. I plugged them together with a network cable, ran network setup on both and they wont talk to eachother. Comp #2 refuses to see the MSHOME workgroup at all.

On Comp #2 when i hit View workgroup computers it says: "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use it" etc...

What the hell. Ive been at it for a while now and I'm sure its something stupid that didnt get checked. I have to network these two comps ASAP.

Thanks

I know nothing about computers, but Cray was over the other day and decided to plug in his wireless card, and he found 4 strong wireless signals in my kitchen. Looks like I'm cancelling my internet and setting up my office in the kitchen.

the way i did mine was with the wizard. you set it up on one computer and it'll ask if you to put a floppy disk in. and it'll put some ---- on it haha. and take the floppy to the laptop. and im sure you can take it from there. its pretty simple if you ask me

Have you put both computers on the same Workgroup?

Sometimes with win98, you have to just leave both computers plugged in for a long time until they can see eachother. If all else fails, go to start-find-computer and type in the other computer's name. Make sure you ahve some shares setup.

Make sure you have file and printer sharing installed / enabled as well. Like Slo said, you have to setup your shares to be able to see anything. Otherwise, you can access the other computer using \\[computername]\[driveletter]$ <- important. These are administrative shares and are enabled by default on most installations. You will need to provide a username with admin rights and a password to access the share.

file and printer sharing is selected on both. MSHOME wont show up on new computer.

Also when i hit My Network Places on Comp #1 it shows eall of its shared folders. When i do it on comp #2 it shows nothing.

wow i cant believe no one actually saw this. what hes trying to do is simply connect both of them to eather withought a router.

dude, if you want to do it this way you cannot use just a reguylar network cable. it has to be a cross over cable.

plug them togeather, reastart both of them, and if you have all the network comopnents set to auto ( i dont know how to do most ---- off the top of my head ) but it shuld work flawlessly.

now keep in mind, if you want one or both computers to access the net, you must have 2 network cards in order for this to happen, and set the main one ( with two network cards ) as a proxy server.

lol. man , you people need to read. t-ro. thats a comoon mistake. its nothing retarted. if you wanna connect two things togeather use a corssover cable. from a modem to a rouder you dont need it. simply because you can plug a modem directly to a computer. but from a router to a router and a hub, you will need a corssover cable. now there are sum ( and i mean sometimes meaning it hapens 50% of the time ) you wont need a corss over cable to connect a router to a hub. but as far as i know the only way to connect two routers is via a corss over cable and ----.
