So yeah, a buddy gave me hand pulling the trans throwing on the clutch and pulling apart the tranny. That is the Phantom grip unit in case anyone didn't know, I hope it works because open difs suck ass.

Well all in all, I felt that it was a productive sat, especially for 7 hours or so. :-\

I'm surprised no one has pointed out I only got half the shift linkage apart, stupid roll pins lol.

Well, it's off the road until may or whenever it's all done. With school full time I don't have too much time to work on my car. After I get the trans back in there, I start the manifold fabrication. So far everything is going smoothly.

Yes, a 95 Del Sol Vtec, but now with an LS block ;D

I blew the B16 awhile ago, bad timing mishap.

what do you have to disconnect to get the gears out of the tranny?

i was going to point it out ;) i hate those ------- pins too, one time i did a swap and couldn't get the driver side axle out or the shift linkage, it was awkward pulling it out with an axle and shift linkage still attached :P

what do you have to do to the tranny to install the phantom grip? besides disassemby

projekteg 02-11-2004 11:00 AM

Re:A saturday afternoon (56k warning)

is it a pita to pull just the tranny? i've only messed with trannies with the whole engine removed, so basically, i've just pulled the two out together :-\

get a pair of vice grips, an old rod bolt, and a big hammer :)

the rod bolt is the same diameter as the pin. it will come right out... with a big enough hammer.

as for installing a phantom slip. drop the tranny out the bottom, take the case apart (you will need snap ring pliers) the guts will come out in 1 assembly if your careful. the rest is cake.
also if you have a sohc, it would be a good time to put in a SRR 4.7 FD ;)

 7 or 8 hours isnt bad time for that job. it took a friend and i a bit longer. but there was a lot of beer involved :)

srr 4.7 FD? I didn't know we could get such a thing? Where is it found?

That is a JDM final drive if I am correct. Surprisingly the whole trans escapade was easier than I thought. You don't need snap ring pliers, though they do help. Some good needle noses and the right knowledge of how to use them will get you through it. Regarding the roll pin, I couldn't find anything remotely close to the same size, so it stayed. There is another roll-pin in the diff that is 1/8", I had the punch or that one though.

I just used the teg instructions posted in the Tech/hybrid section for dismantle, worked great. I can't image manual transmissions to be that different. It was a LOT easier than I thought.
