sandblasting questions

ok so i have some old wheels with paint on them that will not come off. i've tried all kinds of chem products and decided i just need to have them blasted. i called a place and they quoted me $75-$100 so i decided i'd run to harbor freight and buy a blasting gun. so i figure i'm gonna throw the wheel in a tub and just blast it, but what do i use for blast material? i know there is stuff made for it, but this is hmt. can i go to the beach and grab a bucket of sand and just use that? i was reading on another forum to use sand from home depot, but figure the sand at the beach is free and the sand at home depot is $5

so what do you think
just use the home depot sand or run to the beach tonight and steal some sand?
this is the blaster i was gonna get.
$15

Re: sandblasting questions

Me personally I wouldn't use that gun because that ---- can go everywhere, plus it does take a while to clean ---- so that stuff would definitely go everywhere. Might want to pick up a cheap cabinet from harbor freight just to contain all the beads.

The sand from the beach is different from the ---- they sell. I don't even think you can use sand. lol

The stuff we use in the shop has glass beads in it, and is fine for soft aluminum parts.

ok so if you were going to blast something and you were not going to spend the money on blast media then what would you use?

also if i was gonna spend the money on a cabinet i would just pay to have it done

Re: sandblasting questions

sandblasting is a pain in the balls you will go through about 3-4 bags of sand to do you wheels now imagine taking 4 bags of sand pour it on the ground then clean it up. it works great but its a pain also imagine how many times you would have to reload that gun to go through a couple bags of sand

That gun sucks arse. You need a cabinet and Pressurized Abrasive Blaster to do any major work like rims. That price is fair that he is charging

Well, if you really want to go the cheapest way out, then might as well get some sand paper.

Can you show us with what you're working with?

Re: sandblasting questions

i don't have any pics of the rims, but they are gsr fat fives so there are not many tight spots. i am going to paint them black or silver so i could use sand paper.

even if i had pics it would just look like black paint

ok forget the blasting then i'll just get a paint removal disc for my drill
