Samson Goes to the Dyno...

I'm pleased. We had like 12 runs because no lie, the charge pipe off the turbo blew off 6 times and the one after that on the bend blew off twice. Who'd a thought duct tape would be a bad way to fill the gap off the T-bird outlet to the first coupler. ::) Here is the final and full run. I have 2 others but it's charge pipe blowing madness. My Dad took the iniative to put his hand down in the bay and hold the coupler on. Needless to say it gets hot down there and he couldn't hold on. 2nd time he got some shop rags and held on until redline. He did; however, get some burns on the hands, cuts on the wrists, nice burn on the forearm, and cut on the under arm. He loves me and I thank God for him. :y Anyway, Enjoy.

http://media.putfile.com/IMGP0514

The end result: 186whp and 169wtq. JK said the dyno is about 5-7% low putting me to around 195-200whp. He dynoed his old SOHC at 190 and he said he knows it was over 200whp and confirms mine is as well. The dyno was just a way to tune it finely and keep it off the back road street pulls. :-X And to say the very LEAST if you are in the mid PA area (or not like me and drive 3hrs to be) I recommend John to anyone. REALLY nice guy to deal with and EXCELLENT work. :y Mad props goes out to him for the patience in 8 blown charge pipe runs out of 12.

The major disappointment for me: My eGay MBC. I SPIKED to around 10.5psi and it dropped to around 7-8psi. Oh well, I'll get it fixed and probably look into another dyno at a more accurate one to see true results. The best though was a 15psi charge pipe blowing run for 190whp at 4500rpm. ;) ;D

Here is the dyno sheet of the final run:

Sorry so long, but I wanted you all to know EVERYTHING. :y LOL.

Re: Samson Goes to the Dyno...

here i come to bash you, actually, dynojets rate HIGH, not low, subtract about 10-15% from that and that is what you would make on a mustang dyno, a real dyno, not one that is just for showing numbers. Dynojets are more common though, because people like to think they make tons of power and if a tuner shop can sell them a lie that theyre making higher horsepower than they actually are, they'll get tons more buisness. Instead of putting out the real number and running on a dyno that takes many more factors into consideration instead of just spitting out high numbers. and with that amount of power you should be able to break into the 13's easily, learn to drive and bust some atleast 2.1 launches, or else you'll be doomed forever. ---- ---- bitch ---- -----

Nice numbers we know shes got more ;). I also can't say enough about J-K. In my opinion one of the best tuners on the east coast.

so how much boost were you supposed to be running? 10 or 8?

10.5 is what I ran last time (or thought so) and where I would enjoy it to stay for me. Thanks everyone for your comments. ;) ;D

ScottSi --> I don't man this is what JK told me how he dynoed a DSM at 310 then brought it there and it was 283 with not a thing changed on it. :-\ Who knows. I think it has over 200whp also though because it rapes pretty hard.

It hits a little later, but that's how I would prefer it not to mention how hard it hits. Still a D-Series and nothing much, but very much so an improvement with the little additions (Stevemodes' Cheap Slut .60 T-Bird housing swap and new 2.5" upper charge pipe) and fine tuning on the dyno. I'm going to try to get some video up soon on it and might be meeting up with JD (fastcrx) to go to the Mason Dixon Dragway this weekend coming up (if the snow holds off :-X). Anyone else is MORE than welcome to go also. :y

Re: Samson Goes to the Dyno...

I am happy with Josh's car, even though it didn't hold boost as well as we would've liked it runs very well. It is nice to ride in a car that has a pretty good power band unlike the "big ass turbo" hondas that I have done lately.

And I just wanted to thank you guys for the feedback. I wouldn't be around with out you guys. I am just glad I can offer a service. ;)

Also as far as the dyno.. I know dyno jets read higher than mustangs and what not... but dyno jets do differ between each other. This is just one example.. built ls/vtec on a dyno jet down the road puts down 178 on stock cams and 193 on S2P2s ( just street tune)

Then comes to my normal dyno and we put down 178 on the first pull with the S2P2 cams and end up with 190 or so on my normal dyno after a lot of cam gear adjustment and fine tuning.

That is just one of many examples of differences for those who "want" the high numbers..

I just use the dyno for what it is made for.. and that is a tuning tool. :)

LoL.. no it is just the scaling of the boost and AFR, it gets scaled down real tiny on the graph because of adding the boost sensor. I didn't know how to mess with it, so I just left it alone. AFR on that chart was about 11.8-12.0 across the board. And richened up for the street.

I am in the process of making a video. I had one started with the older set-up but really, I want to redo it totally because I now have a quicker car. This was just me practicing launching without FTL and what not. It rained like 8 minutes later too. I was focusing more on launching, but no worries I'll TRY to get some runs in and then go to the track soon (I hope) and then produce a tolerable video. :y

The dyno is a tuning tool. The numbers don't mean anything on their own. It's just useful for observing the effect of changes to the engine to the power band.
A chassis dyno is useless for mapping ECUs.

I wouldn't say usless, that is kinda broad. But yes, the numbers don't really mean squat. But you know people always wanna see the "big numbers". Honestly, I would rather retune a car on the street after I have it on the dyno anway.

baldur 03-15-2006 02:04 PM

Re: Samson Goes to the Dyno...

Yeah, the chassis dyno can tell you what settings make the most power. It can't tell you whether you can run that map on the street without blowing up the engine though because on the dyno you're only at full throttle for max 5 seconds while on the street you can well do full throttle for 30 seconds.

Eh....When we street tune we only do 3rd gear pulls. We aren't in it for 30seconds. How do you figure that number? Like are you saying the standard 3rd gear pull apposed to a FULL 1st-4th run?

Re: Samson Goes to the Dyno...

To be really sure if the tune is right you need to try it out in 5th. I tend to do most of the work in third, and ease up to fourth when third is absolutely perfect. It helps a lot to have a steep hill too, then you don't need to use the highest gear to get the desired full throttle time to make sure everything works right.
In the UK it's common to compete about top speed where they do 1.25 mile runs, those take around 30 seconds to finish and any car that has only been mapped on a chassis dyno _will_ blow it's engine when it attempts that.

That is all fine and dandy. BUt I am not about to have a customer do a 4-5th gear pull on the roads out here. That is 100% retarded. I definitley like street tuning after putting a car on the dyno, but you can compensate for going from the dyno to the street. THe A/F is almost a point leaner in my experiences from going from the dyno to the street. I always richen the tune up a substantial amount when it is done for safety, if I can't get the car on the street after a dyno.

samson 03-15-2006 03:38 PM

Re: Samson Goes to the Dyno...

I agree with JK and that was one HUGE plus to the dyno. His roads aren't very street tune freindly AT ALL. Besides I don't boost in 5th, and only run the 1/4 mile at the track. Worst I had it was prior to this tune and never more than this on a stock block was 4th gear 117mph. It's fine. I must be honest with you and say I've NEVER heard of any other way to really tune besides 3rd gear pulls. I heard of Mustangs doing 4th gear pulls, but that's it. :-\

4th gear pulls wouldn't off been out of the question on the dyno. But the charge pipe kinda limited that, and your pops would off lost some eye brow hair holding that pipe for much longer. :o
