Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
my buddy bought a car last summer and we ran it through carfax last week just for shits and giggles cause a friend had a carfax account. he bought the car from a dealer its a 94 accord lx with a clear Colorado title but carfax says the car is salvaged in kansas, so i just got one question to the HMT title experts, is carfax on crack or is there any way to register a rebuilt from salvage car in another state as a clear title? i already googled the ---- out of this and just cant find an answer

Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
I believe that's there some states that if you title a car from another state with a bad title it won't transfer over. That's just a "heard" thing though.

Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
Salvage title cars can be given a clean title within the same state. You just have to bring the car in for inspection and pay some fees for the new title and inspection.
I am sure there is some work-arounds like transfering the title from one state to another but there are legit ways for a re-title that are not very difficult. |
Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
Wouldn't they just get a rebuilt salvage title then?

Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
My Dad owns a car dealership, and he also has a CarFax account........Well, anyways every time he buys a car from a auction he always CarFax's it even if it come up as having a accident he sends it back. It's just easier not to explain to people why the car was in accident, cause in most cases we don't know. But, we've also had cars come in with a clean CarFax and they are fucked up, as in............We recieved a 03' Buick LaSabre, (I'm a body tech, so sometimes I check for damage on cars for him, or big hit accident fix's), well when I put the car up on the lift the front end had been basically totally replaced, this car had a clean CarFax(we still sent it back). When a insurance company has a car it might still have a clean title just have more damage than they're willing to pay for, so they sell it. Then a body shop buy's them usually and fix's them out of they're pocket(which will not show up on a CarFax unless its reported), which a lot of them aren't and get fixed out of pocket and never get reported, thats what sucks about CarFax. I was selling a 04' SRT4 Neon for someone I knew, this car had a clean title in Michigan, but when we ran the CarFax the car had been given a rebuilt title in Indiana and given a clean title in Ohio, then a clean title in Michigan. So he got screwed, cause if he doesn't let the person buying his car that it has a rebuilt title he can be sued for the amount that they payed for his car and still keep his car. This car only had 16,500 miles on it he had a $16,500 on it originally, once he found out about the title he ended up selling it for only $11,500. He is currently sueing the dealership that sold him the car in Ohio, which new that the car was rebuilt. In the end, with all the natural disasters and other assholes selling these cars you just have to check the car you're buying over really well. CarFax it. People will cheat you........... :y

Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
so stealerships have to tell you the car has or had a salvage title? even if you dont ask?

Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
I'm sure in some cases, some smaller dealerships don't even check cars on CarFax. So, they might not know.......every used car dealer in my area that my dad knows, he said that they check the CarFax for any car they get from the auction for bad accidents, salvage titles, rebuilt titles, flood titles. The 3 biggest used car dealers in my town even check they're trade-ins for that ---- also. Unless its a $500 beater car then they won't. Since car dealers have most of they're titles on hand they would know if the car is rebuilt/salvage in the state it came from. They're is a couple of other companies that do vehicle checks but I forget the names. But, dealerships like CarFax because everyone knows what it is and has heard of it, gives them a peace of mind.

Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
There was a special a few years ago on nbc I believe that shows the used car "underground" and how salvaged cars are transferred to certain states, inspected and given a clean title. They followed several cars damaged from a flood and how they eventually got top dollar for it. They also found people that bought some of these cars, had electrical problems, and ripped out the interior to show the water damage. very interesting show.
My brother recently bought a used car and I told him about carfax. Every dealership in socal that he went to printed a carfax report for the cars he was interested in. Carfax can be deceiving because of lack of reporting as some have stated. |
Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
state A: car
car gets flooded in state A car is prevented from being registered in state A car is sold to state B state B can register car There are a lot of bullshit loop holes. |

If a window rolled up slow or a car was washed(as in title). I will never work at a car dealership again, unless I own it. |

I've never done it personally but I know it can be done with Minnesota for sure, not sure about any other states. |

Re: Salvage title question, is carfax wrong
oh yea and dont buy a salvage title car that hasnt been re titled as salvage rebuildable, b/c you have to get a gay ass "salvage title inspection". every part you replace has to be verified that its not stolen if its worth over $500 or is the engine trans, or frame, the law varies state to state.
heres the one for wi: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/statepa...vage-title.htm |
