Rust Repair Write-ups

Ive been lookign tha last like 3 days to find some writeups with pictures of rust repair. Ive used google and the search engine on here but the only hit i got was of softlyzs repair on his crx and then repairs with no pics. I was wondering if you guys would be kind enough to post up some links to some good rust repair. thanks also anyone have any idea on what to do witha rusted out rear bumper?

Re: Rust Repair Write-ups

You basically have two options.

1) Remove the rust. That means everything. Cut it out, grind it out, use a disolver... whatever you have to do. If this is done, you obviously have to replace it.

2) Neutralize the rust. There are a bunch of products out there that neutralize the rust. Naval jelly is a popular one that comes to mind. You get rid of most of the rust (just the ---- that flakes off), then spray this over it. Once it's on, let it dry, then sand it down so it's smooth.

Hope this helps.

Re: Rust Repair Write-ups

Well, seeing as you have a CRX in your Avitar, The rear bumper or Rebar, should come out and off, you can replace this with a new one, or in this case you probably cant find a new one, so here is what you need:

Grinder, Safety Glasses, 15 Guage sheet metal
20Guage if youre doing thin metals like body pannels
A good mig welder, weling wire, weding mask.

Ok, to start off, lightly grind the whole surface of where youre working, to uncover more potential rust, after you found the rust, you must cut it all out, basically a 1" hole will turn in to a 2" hole or something within thoes proportions.

After you grind out all the rust, make a template out of construction paper and cut it to the appropriate size and dimensions, bazically you have to make the shape bigger than the area you are welding by a few milimeters 7 or 8 or 1/4" so you can overlap, weld in your piece of steel where the hole used to be.

and then youre done. paint the surface of the bumper support with a anti rust paint, then oil guard it. I promise you that rust will never start there again.

For body pannels its a bit different if youre repairing rust holes, the piece of metal has to be exact or close to exact, then when you have it welded in you must grind down any overlap smooth with the rest of the metal, then weld again if you have to, then grind it so everything is flush, then you apply Bondo and go from there.

I hope this helps, I have done body work before, Infact I made my own 1/4 pannels for my 5th gen civic, Bumble ZC can vouch for that, he saw them, they turned out OK, you cant notice them being Home Made ;) Unless you really look close., Bodywork is a pain, but sometimes it definetly pays off if you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time and want it to look nice.

that that rex is mine i bought it off of biggmike. i want to replace the rear bumper because it is basically all rust and wont hold for ----. also i dont think this thing is like cancered with rust yeah it has the rust ont he 1/4s but i dont event hink it is that serious i guess i jsut have to grind it down and then take a look see to see how bad it really is. waht do yall suggest i do as far as the fender flare is concerned? it will be a bitch for me to fabricate a replacement piece with the same line as that flare. oh yeah is it leagal to drive around with no rear bumper?

Re: Rust Repair Write-ups

Rust repair is rust repair, man. You either cut all the rust out and weld in new metal, replace the part entirely with a non-rusted one, or you grind as much off as you can (preferably all of it) and coat it with anti-rust solvent.

My rear bumper (the bumper itself, not the cover, the metal bar on the inside) is rusty as hell. I ground off what I could and coated it with rust remover and called it a day. You're driving a tincan Honda anyways, don't worry too much about the bumpers... ;)

Pretty much unless you can find a yard willing to cut off a panel for you, and you can weld it in, I would just use fibreglass. And bondo. Lots of bondo.

Re: Rust Repair Write-ups

ok so now where do i get the fiberglass and the bondo? i need to get the fiber glass strips and resin right? ---- i dont even know what im getting myself into this out to be fun.also does fiberglass stick to metal that well?

Minor Threat 09-29-2005 08:37 AM

Re: Rust Repair Write-ups

Most hardware stores should sell fibreglass + resin. Any autoparts store should have bondo. Fibreglass will stick to metal, just use lots of resin and make sure the metal is clean.

Re: Rust Repair Write-ups

You can buy a kit at Walmart for cheap in the auto section. Gotta do this soon to the hatch. Midwest winters are nice but damn then for being so generous with the salt. >:( No fancy ---- for me. Just sand her down and lay on some fiberglass and paint that ----. It's a beater for me but I'm getting that gangsta lean on my bumper and don't want that fucker falling off or one day just start dragging on the ground.

davcivic 09-29-2005 10:34 AM

Re: Rust Repair Write-ups

You can also buy the fiberglass at Discount Auto, or go to a body paint supplier and get the stuff there. You can pretty much shape it however you want while it's wet, then when it dries up, sand it, use a little of bondo, or filler, sand it and that's it.

Of course this is after you remove the rust or neutralize it. I would make templates with project board that you can later use as a base for the fiberglass.

That's how I will fix my hatch. maybe, someday.

yeah im gonna have to remove that rear aprona nd do some rust repair aas for the fenders i was going to take this aluminum tape i have and place it over the flare and then use fiber glass over that so i get the right shape.

This isn't a writeup but it might be advantageous for you to buy a book on the subject. I have rust repairs pending on my mustang and I was at the Mcnally-Robinson bookstore and found a fairly good book callled "How to Restore Classic Car Bodywork" by Martin Thaddeus. The examples are mostly british cars but the techniques and methods are the same regardless of car make. Lots of color pictures and examples of different types of repairs.

I don't understand why people go to all the trouble of using fiber glass when you can just get new 1/4 pannels from cetra fit/other places for around $50 a side, bamb, you've got another 10 +/- years of life in the quarters and it was done right. For me, it'd be faster but I'm not big into fiberglass.
